At this unprecedented moment in history, we need your help with vital sea turtle conservation work.

There are seven species of sea turtles in the world; leatherback sea turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) are the only survivors of their family, having diverged from all other sea turtles before the extinction of the dinosaurs. They are the largest species, growing up to 900 kg (2000lbs) with the most extensive geographic range of any living reptile, stretching from the Arctic to the Antarctic oceans. The leatherback sea turtle population is declining, placing them on the endangered species list. Despite their large range, leatherbacks only have a few preferred nesting beaches.

The 6 km (4 mile) stretch of beach at Pacuare Reserve is the fourth most important nesting ground for leatherbacks in the world. This group represents 45% of the genetic stock of the Caribbean population. Protecting the nests in Pacuare Reserve is essential to saving the leatherback sea turtles.

With the current COVID-19 crisis, there have been challenges faced on a global scale, including many in the conservation sector. Bringing in student groups, visitors, and volunteers from the United States and Costa Rica to teach them about sea turtle conservation is the primary source of revenue at Pacuare. With the onset of COVID-19 and the subsequent loss of student groups and income, it is no longer possible for the field assistants to continue protecting the sea turtles at this critical moment of their life cycle.

We are reaching out to ask for contributions to support our food and housing needs, so we can continue to protect this amazing species. We love the work we do: patrolling the beach and relocating turtle nests so that the next generation of sea turtles has the best chance to thrive. At one point, more than 98% of the nests in Pacuare were lost due to rising tides and poaching. Thanks to the tireless monitoring of the field assistants, we have decreased this percentage to 2%.

Protecting this ancient species from extinction will conserve a unique genetic pool, representing a significant proportion of evolutionary history. Sea turtles are a keystone species, performing crucial functions to maintain the integrity of their ecosystem. With your contribution, you are helping to save the sea turtles.
