Service Industry Relief Fund North Carolina SIWANC

Service Industry Workers Advocates of North Carolina Inc. (SIWANC) is a non-profit corporation based out of Chapel Hill, NC

Purpose and Mission Statement:

There's no denying that novel virus Covid-19 (Coronavirus) will become one of the greatest challenges we have ever faced as a nation. Almost everything has been brought to a stand still, for fear of the people we love getting ill.  Millions of people will catch the virus. Thousands, if not more, will die. Social distancing will be the new normal until we get a vaccine or antibody testing.

The thing is, while all of this is terrible, one group of people who are often overlooked during socioeconomic disasters are service industry workers. These hardworking people - who serve you with a smile on their face despite the tremendous amount of financial pressure they are under - have completely lost out on their livelihood. So, how to help such a large group of people? It won't be easy, but Service Industry Workers Advocates of North Carolina is up to the task. Along with other great community funds and resources that have sprung up out of necessity, we can collectively help a lot of people stay afloat during this unprecedented time in our history.

North Carolina is home to five major metropolitan areas, multiple music and arts festivals, RTP, and some of the best college basketball, food, music, and scenery this country has to offer. With that comes a lively and robust service industry with over 420,000  employees, according to a 2017 Census. These jobs include bar backs, bartenders, chefs, cooks, prep cooks, back and front of house supervisors, runners, counter workers (cafes and cafeterias), servers, hosts and hostesses, dishwashers, and counter attendants for restaurants.

With the terms "social distancing" and "stay at home" being ordered as the best examples of how to slow the spread of Covid-19, it is not a huge leap to guess that service workers will be one of the groups hit the hardest. Especially since their places of work have been forced to close, or cut back hours, as part of the quarantining efforts of the government. No one will be going out for a while, and service workers will be left with no way to make a living.

So, yes, thats why the goal for this campaign is lofty - we need to raise as much money as possible in order to give help to those who need it most, right now.  As of June 6, 2020, for every $10,000 raised, twenty out-of-work service industry workers will receive $500 grants to keep their fridges stocked and their bills paid until they can get back to work or figure out what they are doing.

After this initial round of Covid-19, as we grow our non-profit, we hope to raise enough money to get some amazing programs started - continuing education resources, skill workshops, child care and medical relief programs, and trade seminars geared towards best practices and fellowship. Until then, every dollar we raise (less expenses for paper, stamps, checks, fees, licenses, etc) will go to service industry workers who apply for aid with us.

With a combined population of over 10 million people, if half the working adults donated what they would have tipped on their next meal out, we could easily meet this goal, or go beyond and really help our service industry workers survive the coming chaos. If you have read this far, then I hope I have convinced you to hit the "donate" button. If you can't donate, please hit the "share" button and let's set an example for the rest of the country to follow! Thank you so much for your time, and God bless.

How to Apply For Funding:

If you or someone you know would like to apply for assistance, please email us at [email redacted] with subject "Assistance". There will be a brief process to verify employment, and aid will be distributed on a first come first serve basis after verification has taken place. We are currently offering $500 one time grants.

Additional Guidelines for Aid  Distribution:

Applicants must have been employed by a food and beverage related business when the NC Covid-19 state of emergency was declared. Applicants must be able to provide proof of employment in the form of paystubs or a letter of employment, etc. from an officer or manager of the company you worked for. You are ineligible if a: you are receiving unemployment benefits or b: you are working more than twenty hours at a part time job.

How Funds are Collected:

Funds will be deposited into Service Industry Workers Advocates of North Carolina's bank account, where it will be used to send financial relief to those who need it now.

Are Donations Tax Deductible?

They will be as soon as we are approved by the IRS! We we have submitted our 1023 Request for Tax Exempt Status, and are just waiting to hear back from the IRS. As soon as we are approved, I will let all the donors know through an email update from this campaign. Additionally, the CARES Act now allows for a 2020 deduction of up to $300 for charitable purposes. Meaning, anyone who donates less than or up to $300 can write it off regardless of whether the IRS has approved our status. That being said, we are confident that we will be approved as a 501(c)3 organization very soon.
