Creating a Digital Classroom

My students come from multicultural backgrounds and the majority speak Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, and Vietnamese in their homes. Some of my students have lived in the US since birth and some only just arrived in the last couple of years. Along with this wonderful diversity in language, ethnicity and culture, comes a wide variance in academic proficiency, as well as mastery of the socio-emotional skills critical for school success. My school identifies as a community school, which is a strategy for organizing community resources around student success. We subscribe to a holistic view of our students and employ an integrated focus on academics, socio-emotional supports, and family engagement activities that lead not only to improved student learning, but also to stronger families and healthier communities.
My students are kind, creative, and hard-working. They show persistence and determination in the face of academic and social-emotional challenges, and continue to truly amaze our school community. My goal for them as their teacher is to provide them with the tools they need to be able to move forward as young readers, writers, scientists, mathematicians, artists, athletes, social activists, and critical thinkers.
As the world continues to become more digitalized, my students are falling behind. While many have cell phones, their exposure to computers is minimal. Thus, I am hoping to digitalize my classroom by providing 1-1 laptops!
With their own laptop, students will be able to access: online resources for research projects; sites to practice their math and typing skills; presentation creation software; and a digital classroom space where they can communicate and create with one another.
