Create to Rebuild - Puerto Rico : Artists alleviating suffering through community and heartfelt, creative expression
Slowly, but surely, we received word that our family in Puerto Rico is okay after enduring the rage of Hurricane Maria, but their homes are badly damaged and they are without water. Others have not been so lucky - our friend's bisabuelo passed away in the storm and many others still have not heard from any family living in Puerto Rico. In a short (but relieving) phone call, after not having any contact with the outside world for several days, our Uncle Charlie described the hurricane as being like "thousands of tornadoes ripping through all at once". He then went on to say that there is nothing left of Puerto Rico and it is now set back decades. Heartbreakingly, he is right. The island that raised our father, where our grandmother is buried, and where the most lively, loving, and beautiful people we have ever met live, is in a perpetual state of pain and emergency.
Many of us have seen the terrifying images of the aftermath of the storm - roads completely washed away, roofs ripped off of homes with clothes strewn everywhere, people trudging through water up to their chests, and the word 'HELP' written in huge letters on the roof of a home, by individuals making a last ditch effort to preserve their own lives. Now, over a week after Maria made landfall, there is no running water, basic supplies necessary for survival are practically nonexistent, and only 5% of the island of 3.7 million people has restored electricity. People are suffering, dying, and have absolutely nowhere to go to get relief from hardship. Puerto Rico needs every bit of help they can get and they will need it for a long time to come.
Hurricane Maria Community Relief & Recovery Fund is donating their services and money to the most hurricane affected communities in Puerto Rico. Often times, underprivileged communities are forgotten after disasters like Hurricane Maria, and it is so important that we don’t leave them to suffer, while the rest of the island rebuilds. World Central Kitchen is an organization of chefs doing amazing work cooking, and distributing, food to hungry Puerto Ricans. They have already made 15,000 meals and will reach well over 100,000 meals to alleviate starvation.
My name is Christina Rivera and I reside in San Diego, CA. I have a lot of family in Puerto Rico who are still in need of assistance and when I found the World Central Kitchen and read about they work they are doing to feed those that are starving, I knew I wanted to raise funds to donate to their cause. Furthermore, the Hurricane Maria Community Relief and Recovery Fund focuses on the hardest hit and poorest areas of Puerto Rico who will need the assistance for a long time to come. I am not directly related to these organizations, but found them online and researched them. They are credible organizations doing alot of good. I will be withdrawing all donations myself, and then sending 60% to the World Central Kitchen and 40% to the Hurricane Maria Community relief and Recovery Fund through their website donation pages.
