Crafting the Curve: COVID-19 Face Shields

Donation protected
We are now recruiting volunteers with or without 3D printers! Check out http://craftingthecurve.org!

Mission: Flatten the curve through the power of craftsmanship.

One of the major factors contributing to the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic is the acute shortage of personal protective equipment for healthcare personnel. Local hospitals in the Sacramento area such as Sutter Health are already in need of face masks and face shields to protect nurses and doctors from contracting and spreading coronavirus.

Inspired by Budmen Industries in New York, I, a high school junior in Sacramento, decided to design face shields that could be made at home for less than $2 each. For comparison, Budmen estimated their shields to cost $8 each, but given the severity of the situation, I aimed to optimize the cost-efficiency in order to make as many of these face shields as possible with available resources. Update: The new design only costs $1 each, while maintaining high quality and comfort!

However, I've run into a bottleneck issue.

The materials I need in order to craft these shields in large quantities will not arrive until next week, as expedited shipping costs are above $100 per order. While I originally intended to fund this project myself, these shipping costs have made it infeasible to proceed efficiently.

Additionally, while making the face shields once all the materials are ready is a relatively quick process, 3D printing the headgear for the shields takes about 2-3 hours per unit, limiting my daily output to 8-12 masks per day if I work alone 24/7.

Therefore, I am turning to you for help.

Help in any or multiple of the three following ways would be greatly appreciated:

1) Donate to this campaign. Monetary costs constitute the primary bottleneck due to shipping prices and any donation would be wonderful. Delivery costs aside, a $10 would fund the materials to build 5 face shields.

2) Spread the word. Even if you can't personally donate, you may have friends or family that can, and sharing this campaign with others would substantially help me achieve my goals.

Also, if you have any personal connections to hospitals in need, feel free to email me at [email redacted] or share my contact info.

3) Become a crafter. I can't do this alone. If you are willing to help make these shields, I'll be putting up resources soon on my website www.zurieljoven.com/crafting-the-curve: downloads for 3D printing files, links to purchase parts, and video tutorials to make these shields at home. If you want to work more closely with me, shoot me an email at [email redacted] and I'll be in touch.

I try to provide daily updates on my blog page at www.zurieljoven.com/blog. Check there for progress reports but I will make sure to share any major news here as well.

Thank you for supporting my Crafting the Curve project!

(P. S. I named it Crafting the Curve because I aim to flatten the curve, or slow the spread of COVID-19, through crafting and engineering.)
