My brother, Troy Hamblin, is a Son, Husband and a Grandfather of two soon to be three. He is a hardworking father of five who rarely complains, and spends the majority of what little free time he has hunting and fishing. One thing you may not know about him is that Troy has been living with Hepatitis C for over 15 years. He was a courageous child. Believe me it wasn't easy being his younger sister and following him into a variety of daring feats. As kids, we spent a lot of time in hospitals repairing any number of injuries caused by our thrill-seeking childhoods, and the doctors think that during one of these visits, Troy inadvertently contracted Hepatitis C.
Being still courageous, Troy is currently suffering from acute liver failure. He's on the list for a transplant, but it can't be done until he is cured of the Hep C so that when he gets a new liver, he won't get sick again. Troy's genotype is the hardest to treat for this disease, but finally in December of 2013 two new medications came on the market that have an 80-90% chance of curing him. Troy needs two treatments of this new, very expensive medication and even with insurance it will cost him close to $40,000 for each treatment, that's almost $80,000 in medicine. He is already under extreme financial stress due to bi-annual MRIs and endoscopy, not to mention the many medical specialists he has to consult with on a monthly basis who require extensive blood work at each visit. The fees are astronomical.
The Medical Insurance Industry in this country is very complicated. You pay for it forever hoping that one day, God forbid you really need it, it will save your life. But Industries don't save people's lives, people do, and we are looking to every person we know and asking them to help save Troy's life.
When I think about my brother I like to picture him at his happiest, with a fishing pole in his hand, the sun resting on his shoulders, and the warm Texas Gulf at his feet. The way his eyes light up when he holds his granddaughter. I never knew my brother would love children so much. It's truly beautiful to see. Especially when I think about our daily sibling squabbles. Personally, I like to try and hear him laugh, which isn't an easy task because he's one of those silent laughers. The truth is, I don't get to see Troy very often because we live three thousand miles away, but there's no way at 44 years old with a way to heal him that I'll accept not seeing him ever again because the price to heal him is too high.
As a family, we are doing everything we can, but everything we can do is unfortunately not enough. I don't know many people who have the capacity to manage a medical situation like this, and we're not giving up. The financial burden gets bigger and we keep fighting to beat it.
