Smile For Shane

Hi Everyone,

We’re raising money for my beautiful nephew Shane who has Perthes Disease.

Perthes disease is a rare childhood condition that effects the hip when blood supply to the hip bone is disrupted, causing bone cells to die, which erodes the hip causing severe pain in the process.

It is treated in many ways but pain management remains a key issue faced by many children. Unfortunately medical agreement on the best way to treat perthes is yet to be reached. Parents are told to ‘wait and see’ to enable the doctors to best asses their child’s condition.

Statically 1 in 10,000 children are diagnosed with Perthes while 1 in 80,000 have it in both hips. Our Shane was chosen as the superhero to battle this disease in both hips!!

Shane awaits what could be a life changing operation for him. Just last summer on one of his follow up appointments his parents (my brother Darren and his fiancée Bronagh) were informed their son is in chronic pain everyday and sadly knows no different. The doctor said he’d have him wrapped in bubble wrap had it being his son and in that same breath pointed out how Shane’s hips have gotten worse and needed the recommended operation within the next 6 weeks to increase his chances of recovery. However due to the pandemic, here we are 7 months on NO operation, little to no guidance, a stronger more noticeable limp, a child in pain.

Shane may ‘look’ like the happy little boy you see but we see the pain behind those eyes. The little boy who isn’t supposed to run, who can’t have a bouncy castle for his birthday, who can’t play football with his brothers, who can’t walk long distances without crying ‘Mammy/Daddy why does my legs hurt’
‘Mammy/Daddy it’s so sore’

With every tear my heart breaks a little more knowing there’s not much i can do to take his pain away, but i want to do all i can to keep him feeling loved and help continue to smile and be happy.

We’re creating this challenge in March/April (our birthday months) to try raise funds for his future medical and life adjustments. His new life in a wheelchair, his life on crutches, his life of rehab, his life on learning to walk again, his life of arthritis, his life of living and adjusting to different types of pain both physically and mentally.

we’ll keep our instagram ‘Smile for Shane’ posted with his journey as we await his confirmed date, but until then join the challenge, donate if you please and watch his journey! <3

his fight is our fight,
Thank you
