I am one of the tri-chairmen of the Colorado-Wyoming District Optimist Junior Golf Program.
Optimist International is one of the world’s largest service club organizations with 2,500 clubs and 100,000 members in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, and around the world. Carrying out the motto “Bringing Out the Best in Kids”, Optimists conduct positive service projects that reach more than six million young people each year. The Optimist Junior Golf Program is one of the organization’s most prominent projects. More information about Optimist International is available at http://www.optimist.org/
Each year, approximately 700 junior golfers (boys and girls ages 10 – 18) travel from around the world to play in the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships (commonly referred to as THE OPTIMIST) at Trump National Doral Resort and Spa, Miami, Florida.
THE OPTIMIST brings together some of the world’s most talented junior golfers, many of whom (like Denver’s own Mark Hubbard, and, more recently, Jason Day, Emiliano Grillo, Lexi Thompson, and Brooke Henderson) have the potential to become leading collegiate and professional golfers in the future.

In the Colorado-Wyoming District, we will be holding District qualifiers in June 2019 to send 64 junior golfers to the 2019 OPTIMIST from July 16 - 31, 2019. Our ongoing involvement with the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado produced a record number of entrants in our 2018 District qualifiers. We increased the 2018 field size of our District qualifiers to 245 from the 228 we had in 2017. That also increased our allocation of slots for the 2019 OPTIMIST to 64, compared to the 46 slots we were allocated for the 2018 OPTIMIST. We also were given 23 additional 2019 OPTIMIST slots for a 36-hole Optimist Junior Golf Tour event that we held in October 2018 at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club.

If we are to send 64 junior golfers to the 2019 OPTIMIST (and continue to provide financial assistance to all of them), we need to significantly expand our fundraising activities. We’re looking for some generous (potentially, “title”) sponsors for our District qualifiers. If we maintain the same level of financial assistance to our junior golfers as we have in the past ($ 1,000 for the seven age group winners and $ 500 for everyone else), we need to raise around $ 45,000.
