Intubation Boxes to Protect Healthcare Workers

The high demand and shortage of personal protective equipment - like N95 masks, face shields, and gowns - means that we have had to get resourceful. Hospitals need solutions for protecting doctors, nurses, and patients. Alternatives must be deployed fast but, with lives at stake, also must be high-quality and well-executed. This is why intubation boxes were developed.

If you are a medical worker in need of an intubation box, fill out this Google Form  and we'll be in touch soon.

What is an intubation box?
An intubation box is an inexpensive and reusable device that acts as a protective barrier between a patient and medical staff, minimizing the spread of coronavirus.

How do intubation boxes help?
Intubating  a COVID-19 patient is considered extremely high-risk for medical staff as the procedure exposes them to infectious bodily fluids produced by the patient. Studies have shown that the box helps contain these fluids while enabling staff to access the patient.

Why CovidBox 2.7?
When we first heard about intubation boxes, Max built a few prototypes in his garage. He used simple, open source designs readily available online. We donated them to a couple of hospitals but received mixed reviews. While the doctors appreciated the extra protection, they had concerns about its functionality.

In the process of redesigning the box, we came across CovidBox 2.7 developed by Mike Rooney, a Mechanical Engineer in Canada. His iteration of the box addressed all the feedback we had heard from medical staff who tested the first version. We partnered with Pink Sparrow, a design and fabrication shop in LA/NY, to scale manufacturing of the Covid 2.7s to meet an increasing demand.

We delivered CovidBox 2.7 prototypes to the same hospitals and heard great feedback:

"Thank you...This is truly appreciated by all, especially our residents who have intubated numerous Covid-19 confirmed patients. They told me that they feel "safe" using this box, that means more to me as their residency director than anything I can wish for."  - Residency Director

"Your CovidBox has been extremely well received. Everyone has praised it." - Emergency Medicine Physician

Who We Are
Geoff Karasic is a Medical Device Engineer at Smith+Nephew, Max Roberts is a Physicist and Software Engineer at Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and Kat is a Strategist and Producer who has worked with everyone from Google to Levi’s. They wanted to use their combined skills to help healthcare workers on the frontlines of this unprecedented crisis.

Special thanks to Dr. Louis Tran, Dr. Anita Lee, Shaun Edwards, and Huw Roberts who have all helped make this project a reality!

Our Goal
To meet the current demand, we need your help to fundraise. Each box costs ~$250; 100% of donations will go towards materials, labor, and delivery.

For this first stage, we’re trying to raise $8,000 to build and donate thirty boxes to hospitals across LA County.

With thirty CovidBox 2.7s deployed, the next round of health practitioner feedback will help us continue to refine the design to maximize efficiency and usefulness. The designs are also publicly available online (for free) and will continue to feature new updates for anyone who wants to build them. Our goal is to create the safest and most useful version of this device.

Our Communication Promise
We will post text and photo updates about where each CovidBox 2.7 goes and the next stages.
