Reduce the Spread of COVID-19 in Tanzania

 Help reduce the spread of COVID-19 in Kariakoo, one of the busiest market places in Tanzania. Every day, about 1.5 million people pass through this market, making physical distancing nearly impossible. By providing face masks, hand sanitizer, soap and educational resources to low-income market vendors they can continue earning to support their families, and serve their customers, as safely as possible.

In Tanzania, the risk of infection from COVID-19 is reported to be ‘extremely high’, according to reports from the U.S. Embassy, with a likelihood of large numbers of unreported cases and deaths. Because of its high density and mobile population, Kariakoo will have a huge impact on the spread of COVID-19 elsewhere in the city and across Tanzania.

Every $10 donation will provide one person with two locally made cloth masks, washing soap, sanitizer, hygiene instructions (in Kiswahili) and will contribute to educational posters to be displayed in the market area.  All donations are greatly appreciated and you will receive a tax receipt from PayPal Giving Fund Canada. 

Stewardship of your donations will be provided by the Rotary Club of Windsor (1918) and its Foundation, a Registered Canadian Charity, ensuring that nearly 100% of your donation will be spent on the project.  Windsor (1918) will transfer the funds to the Tanzanian Registered NGO PANETA and its members will execute the project. 

Our team includes people from Tanzania, Canada and the UK with experience in the delivery of public health campaigns,  and research and creative projects in Dar es Salaam. Some of us are currently working in frontline response; others have battled COVID-19 or lost loved ones in that neighbourhood to the disease. 

What brings our international team together is this: at a time when it is harder than ever to ignore our global ‘interconnectedness’, as well as deep social inequalities, there is an urgent need to support one another in our worldwide struggle against the virus.  Administration, outreach, translation, and design services have been donated by our team of volunteers.
