COVID-19 Relief for Mgahinga Community in Uganda

Dear friends and supporters of MCDO,
It is very saddening to see Kisoro; a top tourist destination completely shut down with no tourists. As many of you know, Mgahinga Community Development Organization (MCDO) manages a couple of ecotourism enterprises in Kisoro district, southwestern Uganda. All our ecotourism supported projects, including Amajambere Community Camp, Mutanda Eco Community Centre, and Mgahinga Community Junior School, are closed. We are struggling to raise funds to pay our staff and support the families whose lives have been affected by the closures due to COVID-19.
To prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the Uganda government closed international borders in March, restricting entry to all persons traveling into the country, including tourists. We are quite uncertain when the government will open the borders and allow tourists into the country. However, even when the restrictions are lifted, the gorilla tourism industry in Kisoro is likely to take a long time to recover, so we need your help!
We are organizing this fundraiser on behalf of MCDO to raise funds to distribute relief items to the families affected by the closure of our ecotourism projects. Your donations will enable MCDO to purchase food supplies, pay for emergency medical care, and personal hygiene items. We also plan to support other vulnerable families, especially the national park porters, tour guides, and Batwa families.
We are grateful to MCDO partners, including SEDCU, and local tour operators including Bamboo Ecotours, who have already donated in support of the COVID-19 emergency relief efforts in Kisoro. We hope all our friends and well-wishers who have always supported MCDO will join hands and contribute to this fundraiser.
