COVID-19 relief for the Lopez Family

For anyone who has had the pleasure of knowing the Lopez family, you know that they are the kindest, funniest, and caring people that you will ever meet. If you have had the pleasure of knowing Reyna, you know that she is one of the most loving human beings whose personality brightens up the room. Reyna is a loving wife to her husband, Rodolfo and a devoted mother to 3 children; 2 daughters, Damia (4 years old) & Luna (2 years old) and a son, Noah (4 months old).
In June, Reyna, Rodolfo, and Noah tested positive for COVID-19. Rodolfo and Noah have fortunately fought off the virus and have been progressing towards regaining a healthy state. However, to this day, Reyna is still fighting for her life.
Reyna is 31 years old and has had complications with her health since being diagnosed a couple years ago with Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis. From numerous doctor visits to hospital stays, she has been battling for the last few years. On June 10th, she was admitted into the hospital due to symptoms of pneumonia. The following day her COVID-19 test results came back positive. As the days continued, her health started to progressively decline. She started to lose sense of smell and taste, she became so fatigued that she had no energy to talk or move, and the pain in her lungs worsened as fluids started to build in them. On June 23rd, Reyna was intubated and placed on a ventilator. Two days later, the virus had aggressively attacked her lungs to the point that Reyna needed more than just a ventilator to have enough oxygen throughout her body. Miraculously, she was able to receive ECMO therapy at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. ECMO stands for Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, which is another form of life support. The ECMO machine replaces the functions of the heart and lungs, it is connected to a patient through plastic tubes in large veins and arteries in the legs, neck or chest. It then pumps blood from the patient’s body to an artificial lung that adds oxygen to it and removes carbon dioxide. Once removed the machine then sends the blood back to the patient via a pump with the same force as the heart.
It has been 5 long weeks that Reyna has been on a ventilator as well as ECMO, with little to moderate progression. Every possible therapy regimen has been attempted, but now it is up to Reyna’s body to overcome the virus. The longer a patient is on ECMO therapy the less of a chance they have of surviving. However, the doctors are giving her an additional 5 weeks of therapy, if there are no signs of improvement the doctors and Rodolfo will have to make some difficult decisions on how to move forward. If Reyna can push through and fight this virus off, doctors are expecting various forms of physical therapy for her to learn how to talk, walk, and gain her strength that she once had.
With everything that has happened in the past weeks, it has unfortunately affected her family in ways that they were not prepared for. Her husband, Rodolfo, is fortunate to be able to leave on FMLA to assist Reyna with therapy if she can pull through, but that can mean months of limited funds coming in from his primary source of income. The funds raised from this campaign will be used toward helping the Lopez family with their monthly expenses (rent, bills, food, daycare, etc.) as well as the compounding hospital and medical bills. It will also provide an emergency savings account in case the worst possible outcome occurs, providing an enormous help for her children’s future.
