Covid-19 Hay Appeal 2021

Please help us and our horses!

Positive Horse Training Spain is an equine charity operating from Spain, founded by Claire Waldron and Rachel Bedingfield. Our Centre is a safe-haven and rehabilitation centre for traumatised horses, many rescued from the meat market. Along with donations, we fund the running of the centre with income from our schedule of Courses. Due to Covid-19, we have had to cancel all our Spring and Summer courses this year, the income from which would help to buy our hay for the year.

While much of Spain is beginning to lessen lockdown restrictions, our Province still has too many cases to allow any ease in the restrictions. We have waited as long as we could, using our own money to support the Centre, hoping that we would be able to get some income from letting our villa, which is the source of our personal incomes. As it is, we now know we are unlikely to have any income until much later this year. Our personal funds have run out and it is hay season here. We are asking for help so that we can buy enough hay now, when the prices are lowest, to see us through until October.

Currently, we have 9 horses in recovery at our Centre. We are in Andalucia and, although our horses can roam freely in the olive groves, we do not have any grazing and depend on having good hay and straw stocks. We use about 10kgs per horse per day, which equates to at least 3 bales per day. This costs €500/month.

What we do

We care for and rehabilitate horses using positive reinforcement, which means we wave carrots, not sticks! We work directly with rescue horses and have developed a best practice model for teaching others how to rehab emotionally traumatised equines. We share this with equine charities across the world as well as supporting horse owners.

Our mission is to improve the lives of as many horses as we can by educating charity staff and horse owners, This type of rehabilitation improves the success of re-homing of rescue horses as it creates a long-lasting foundation of trust and emotional healing. And this, in turn, lowers the rate of horses being returned to rescue centres. We have an international outreach.

We are a young charity, founded in December 2019 and have not had enough time to build up reserves to cover such a long period of closure. We are a small team of 3 and are working as hard as we can to continue our rehab and filming work, and to develop and deliver our services in different ways so we can still offer outreach support to charities and horse owners around the world.

About Our Horses

Many of our horses have been saved from the meat market. They have all been abused and suffered terribly. They have come to us because their traumatic experiences have made it difficult for them to find homes. To us, they are not lost causes. We know that we can offer them the physical and emotional rehabilitation they need. We have fostered amazing transformations and are moved by their ability to heal and to learn to trust humans again.  Our horses, though small in number, enable us to try new approaches to emotional rehabilitation and to share best practise with others. The focus of the Charity is in education, teaching, and supporting other rescue charities and horse owners. We make training videos using our own horses which are the foundation of our teaching. We have a big vision, to change the world for horses through education and training. But we really do need your support!
