[COVID-19] Feed the fighters, seniors & families.

The impact of COVID-19 is being felt across the country and communities big and small, in ways we could have never imagined. Beyond the global health crisis, the coronavirus is having severe impacts on individuals, small businesses and health care organizations.

The idea is simple: Feed people in our community who are significantly impacted by COVID-19, while supporting our local restaurants who are really hurting at this time.

We’ve been receiving a lot of requests for help from multiple sources as there are people in our community suffering due to the limited access to foods.  The healthcare workers, particularly those in the overnight shift, are one of them as the cafeterias in the hospitals are closed after 7pm (some at 5pm) on certain days.  Seniors in our community who have been relying on senior centers are now more isolated and skipping meals, and special needs families are in tough situations as they lose access to regular lunch programs.

So, timely meals will be greatly needed and appreciated by so many people in our community in this trying time.  We’ve already run a quick, but meaningful campaign in March, where we raised $7,300+ in just 4 days, delivering ~800 meals at 9 different hospitals in just about two weeks.  Keeping this great momentum, we are looking to scale up the effort in order to help more people (e.g. healthcare workers, seniors) and local businesses in more sustainable ways.

Here’s how it works;

1. You donate. (Subject to tax exemption)

2. 100% of the fund received will be passed to the local restaurants.

3. The restaurants will prepare and deliver meals to people in need.

Hospitals we have supported include Kaiser Permanente Medical Center (Santa Clara, Oakland, Cupertino, San Jose), Regional Medical Center, Washington Hospital, Palo Alto Health Care System, Sutter Health, and San Francisco Campus for Jewish Living.  We’ve also partnered with 10+ local restaurants and are looking to expand further.  We are also in conversation with multiple organizations to partner with, including KACF, Ecumenical Hunger Program, just to name a few.

To give you a bird's-eye view, here is the breakdown of how the money will be spent more in detail.  Let’s take the healthcare workers in ICU (Intensive Care Unit) as an example:

Many ICU and Emergency Departments have ~50 frontline staff, which means they need around $750/day (50 meals x $15 a meal), about $5K for a week per hospital.  We estimate that $100K would serve 2 hospitals for 10 weeks or 4-5 hospitals for about a month.

As we grow, we hope to be able to provide the meal support in more sustainable ways and eventually help the community recover from this pandemic as quickly and healthy as possible.

Join us, your kind action may change somebody’s life in this dire situation!
