Uganda Micro Loan Stimulus Package

Tax deductible
Mercy Aid is teaming up with Muvule Financing to help businesses in Uganda rebound from the devastating effects of the coronavirus lockdown by distributing microloans to businesses that would otherwise go bankrupt.

The president of Uganda ordered a police-enforced lockdown, which has forced every non-essential business to close for several weeks. Since 60% of Ugandans are self-employed shop owners, these people who were already living hand to mouth are at risk of losing their source of income, even when the country opens back up again.

Similar to how the US Government gave loans to small businesses here in the States, Muvule Financing is well equipped to provide $100 microloans to help business owners in Uganda invest in new inventory so that they can get back on their feet again.

In the past, microlending has been proven to be one of the most effective poverty reduction and disaster relief tools in the world. Micro-credit empowers people to work hard and leverages the resourcefulness of entrepreneurs to make a lot happen with a small amount of capital. Rather than giving them fish, it teaches them to fish, and it creates independent, self-empowered, business owners.

To understand how microlending helps, consider Nazziwa’s story...

When we first met Nazziwa over a year ago, she was doing back breaking casual labor jobs for just $2/day. Her husband was a drunk who left her to care for her four kids on her own.

None of her kids were going to school and although they weren’t starving, they weren’t eating every day either. When they did eat, they had ‘posho', a calorie dense corn mash with no flavor, no protein, and no micro-nutrients. Her children were severely malnourished and their growth was stunted.

When we gave Nazziwa her first loan for $100, she owned a sewing machine, but no cloth. She used the money to buy cloth and sew clothes for the children in her village. Within five months she was debt free, making $21/day, feeding her family three nutritious meals a day, and her kids had been in school ever since.

Now, due to the Coronavirus, she’s burnt through her savings and can’t buy another roll of cloth. If we can’t issue her another loan, then she will lose everything that she’s worked for this past year and she’ll be reduced back into a state of perpetual poverty.

Please, help us raise the capital we need to issue loans to people like Nazziwa.

Now, with our partnership with Muvule Financing, we’re able to guarantee that 100% of your donation gets straight into the hands of struggling entrepreneurs in Uganda, while Muvule covers the administrative costs of the program.

Thank you for your contribution and supporting the hard work of these women and their families. The effects of your contribution will continue to support one entrepreneur after another, every six months. Forever.
