Urgent Funds Needed for COVID induced bills
Donation protected
Our dad, Tom Knopf, was diagnosed with COVID two weeks ago, after what appeared to be a bout of bronchitis. He began to improve, however a few days later his oxygen levels dropped and he was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
He was found to have COVID and double pneumonia and within 2 days had to be intubated with a ventilator.
He has been on the ventilator for 8 days.
Our mom has been partially-disabled since 1990, and is on permanent disability from Social Security. This is her only income. Additionally, Dad is her primary caregiver when home health aides are not available.
We received some very kind donations to help fly my sister, Beth, out to help take care of Mom, but it has become clear that Mom needs more hours of care than home health can provide, including overnight. This will require a short-term assisted living/respite program and it is not covered by Medicaid.
There are also many bills coming due for which there is no income as Dad’s employer ended COVID pay back in July.
Dad will most likely be unable to return to his full capacity as caregiver for her. We know that additional medical assistance and care may also be necessary for Dad, depending on his recovery.
My sisters and I are working together to cover what we can; however, two of us live several states away and our sister who lives locally has health challenges and children with special needs. Because of this, we are in need of additional help. We are looking into available financial aid, but the application processes take time and we aren't certain how long they will take to get approved.
We have seen the power of people coming together and doing what they can to help, and we are hopeful that this will be a way we can make sure that our parents are provided for and taken care of during this extremely difficult time.
We do not know exactly what the future holds in store, so we are trying to both live in the moment while preparing for an uncertain future.
We greatly appreciate any and all help as we seek to ensure they are both safe and well-cared for.
Important Update:
Regarding Kim/Mom's Care:
As you know, mom's disability and current care level requires trained medical professionals and 24-7 care.
After much research, many calls and conversations, and the current availability of facilities, we were able to find a place that had both the immediate availability and the appropriate care to provide for her needs.
Unfortunately, her Medicaid coverage is not able to be accepted here, so it will be completely out of pocket.
Thankfully, her first month has been covered by the GoFundMe so far, however this will most likely require at least 2 months if not 3 until the next place is available for long term care that does accept her waiver, and at which time we will hopefully also be moving Tom/dad in as well.
Due to the waitlist at the long term care facility, it is also possible we may need to move dad in to the short term facility also which will double the cost.
Current fees for mom only total: $6,048 starting in November.
October was a pro-rated amount.
Please continue sharing and praying that their needs will be provided for during this transition time through the continue generosity of others.
