We are the USA Board, a 501(c)(3), non-profit, who raise funds to support this important and large hospital in North India. The need right now is enormous.
Ludhiana, Punjab, INDIA: At the end of March 2021, CMCL predicted that the cases would break all records and that all districts and the state should be prepared for the worst. The community medicine department predicted that there would be over 182,000 cases in 3 months from March 2021 to May 2021.
The genomic sequencing of the strain showed that 85% of cases were the B1.1.7 or the Kent (UK) variant which was highly infectious compared to the original strain. The peak was predicted to be at least double and possibly treble of the previous year unlike in the west where it was less than the preceding years. From 14th April onwards, each district experienced a surge of cases setting a new record every day. The case fatality rate at 2.8% (284 deaths per million) is currently the highest in the country.
As of 25th April, Punjab crossed the mark of 7,000 new cases per day milestone and with Ludhiana reporting a record of 1,398 new cases, the highest single day surge. At present nearly 80% of the level 3 facilities (ventilator beds) are occupied, other districts and states have no available beds. There is a shortage of ventilator beds. There is a need to add at least another 100 ventilators, non-invasive ventilation units, NRBM etc to the COVID ICU.
Funding is needed immediately for oxygen and equipment. We cannot move quickly enough. Many lives are at stake.
