Education relief program in rural Guatemala - Your donation will make a huge impact in children's education while COVID19 -

Our community: Public schools in the area do not have internet / Teachers and students work through cell phones (WhatsApp) / 50% of the students do not have electricity service / 89% do not have a computer or internet service
Turning in assignments is not enough. Children need to have access to quality teaching and learning. Dropping out of school and migrating is not an option either. Our Education Relief Fund will help us to:
- Equip a virtual classroom and assure social distancing in our facilities
- Provide computers and other technologies
- E- services and educational material
- Tutoring (children & parents) to guide education while remote learning
- Spiritual and psychological care

In Guatemala, 5 out of 10 children have dropped out of school as of September 2020 due to the fact that the coronavirus crisis has led to complications regarding school homework, accessibility to internet and resources, school closings, curfews, lack of transportation, and mainly the economic crisis into which the Guatemalan society has plunged. More specifically, in Quetzaltenango education authorities have affirmed that since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020 , 600 students from Quetzaltenango have dropped out of classes and migrated to the U.S.
Face-to-face classes have been suspended since March 16 and will continue to be suspended in 2021, having a devastating effect on rural areas and vulnerable communities, where many homes lack internet and computers. A critical impact: Return of the children to the sowing fields / Child labor in informal commerce in streets and markets/ Increase of Migration to the U.S.
Since government orders affirm that education will continue virtually in 2021 due to the new wave of coronavirus cases, this means children will keep studying through cell phones through WhatsApp (parents’ cellphones) and they will receive weekly assignments that they must do and send back, without having feedback from teachers. For the community this is a complex situation that creates serval barriers, such as the fact that families’ cellphones are basic and do not have options for Apps like WhatsApp, internet cost is over 100 Quetzales ($13) for 2 weeks, families have one phone for 3 to 5 children, and without enough data. In addition, many mothers and fathers cannot read or write, which makes them not able to assure what their child is learning or with what they are having difficulties.
The fragility of the students has increased as they are doubly exposed to migration, forced labor, child exploitation, and a life without the opportunities that would arise from school. Education should not disappear even in the worst humanitarian crisis. Having internet and technological services is crucial for the education of children in times of COVID19.
ACD is responding creatively to address the needs of children from the community and will provide opportunities within the “new normal remote education” through virtual tools, guided and safe under the standards of protection of living in COVID19-free spaces. We believe that no child should lose hope in their future and potential due to the pandemic.
About ACD Guatemala:
ACD Guatemala is a nonprofit and faith-based organization located in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. Its focus is aimed at serving vulnerable children and families in the community who have difficult backgrounds and are at risk of migrating to the United States. The organization supports children and their families with educational and spiritual support to reduce, the trend of irregular migration and involvement in criminal or gang activities. In the larger community, we provide support with a medical clinic, migration education, efficient wood-burning stove installations, and water purification outreaches to hundreds of people. The organization’s commitment is to walk alongside the community to discover a new path of life, to pursue new opportunities, and to empower the community while doing so.
While we know the struggles and conditions of the families we serve, we also know they demonstrate great resilience and determination in making a living.
