UK Covid 19 Lockdown Challenge for Young People

Raising funds for the  UK Covid 19 Localisation Modelling Challenge for Young People

England has just commenced a second Lockdown.   Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales have their own schedules.   There are many people severely impacted economically, physically, psychologically, and otherwise by lockdowns.   It is a draconian and some feel last resort action to attempt the well documented second wave from getting out of control.

Many people are asking: How long does the lockdown need to be?  How Strict?   In summary: What does the lockdown need to achieve in your local area?

The answer we have found in dozens of in depth case studies researching with young people across the world is 'it depends'.   Local conditions matter:   Conditions in Manchester are not the same as York.   Birmingham is different from Cardiff.   Glasgow is not the same as Belfast.  London is not the same as Milton Keynes or Gloucester or Brighton or Blackpool.  Hackney is not the same as Southgate or Ealing or Soho or Croydon or Wimbledon.

Each area has a different number of Susceptible people who can still be infected and each area has a different demographic age profile. And each area has a different number of people infected.  And each area has different living conditions and different social norms and structures.

These are clear and difficult tradeoffs: Effectiveness of the lockdown halting a second wave versus  needlessly destroying economic, physical and psychological well being from enforcement when conditions may no longer warrant that.

Why this contest?   There is much very good work being done by some of the most talented and able scientists and policy analysts in the world here in the UK.   There are many models and initiatives.    But these initiatives so far have not addressed a critical gap:  young people are the least affected by Covid 19 but the most dangerous to others.   Unless young people understand these issues it is hard to see how as a society we can expect unwavering compliance with centrally driven directives.

This contest is offering a window for young people to gain this understanding and join dozens of other young people around the world who have worked with us on these issues and hundreds of others who have singed up for our course.

We believe if young people can actively participate in understanding the needs of their local area, they can not only be active informed participants to help manage the spread of Covid 19 and they can actively participate to help answer questions like these as the Covid 19 Pandemic evolves.

The Covid 19 Localisation Modelling Group with our co-sponsors Edge Heath and Strasys Consulting are is offering a cash prize to two age groups:  Secondary school age up to 18 (under 18 can enter with the supervision of an anyone 18+) and 19-23.

These groups qualify for this contest because we believe they are a key part of any solution to managing Covid 19 while until a cure, such as a vaccine has been invented, tested and widely distributed.   Estimates vary widely but most analysts are saying we are in this for some time to come.   Knowledge is power and we hope to disseminate a better understanding and in that way make a contribution to

The prizes total a minimum of £600 for each group of 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes underwritten by us and our sponsors.   If we raise more than £1200 we will allocate additional funds to the prize pool.   Above £1200 raised we will allocate funds to cover the cost of running this competition and allocate funds to internships for young people who have successfully developed case studies to a high standards to become Covid 19 Localisation modelling coaches.   If we raise more we will invest in expanding our course offerings to cover specific issues affecting unique local areas.

We hope you will contribute and help to make this a very exciting contest for the participants and help us fund and make more sustainable what has been to date an entirely voluntary activity aimed at making a positive impact in our efforts to cope with Covid 19

On behalf of the dozens of volunteers including many experts who have made this contest possible by working with us and our students since March: Thank you for reading and we look forward to the contest!
