Covid 19, Cholera, Floods Gamo appeal

Donation protected
Greetings my name is Wolde Tadesse, a Gamo elder residing in Oxford, United
Kingdom. In 2006 my community inducted my wife and I as Elders in a ceremony
held, at our house in Chencha, Ethiopia, where I was born.

These are long respected and traditional titles that  not only recognize age and experience but most importantly enable community representation and allow the fulfilment of duties to protect and support the community.

My intention is to help raise GBP 300K for this group, the Gamo, an agro-pastoral people living in the mountains and valleys of southwest Ethiopia. Many Gamo have also migrated to urban centres where they are well known as weavers of national costumes.

The reasons for this appeal are as follows:

Over the past two years several disasters have affected my homeland. First, unrest and violence, including several murders in Addis Abeba, the capital, forced Gamo weaving families to flee the city and return to their rural farmsteads to rebuild shattered lives. Recent floods and landslides have caused massive devastation with 20 people losing their lives and 6,617 families (14,605
individuals) currently left without the means of survival [1]. An outbreak of cholera which spread through the region has also caused many deaths and severe illness. This situation has been further exacerbated by the infestation of swarms of locusts which are ravaging crops all across the land. Now this very vulnerable population, weakened by these developments and loss of livelihoods is facing the consequences of COVID-19 threatening a region with poor health facilities and access to medical supplies.

My aim is to raise funds to enable a local NGO the GAMMO Development Association ( a charity registered in Ethiopia)  to respond to this situation by utilizing local tailors to make face masks and other appropriate protective uniforms (15% GBP 45K) purchase locally made tools and building materials to construct sanitary facilities in order to prevent  water borne diseases such as cholera (30% GBP90K) build bamboo houses (30% GBP 90K) to shelter homeless flood victims and finally to purchase animals, seeds and tools to replace those lost during landslides (25% GBP 75K).

With your help, I hope to hit this target and reach the beneficiaries as soon as possible. Donations can be sent through GoFundMeUK I will ensure regular updates and reports on the progress of this initiative and a final evaluation. Please help get the word out and please share my link to your Facebook Timeline and other relevant media. I am grateful to you all.
