Members of staff at The Courtauld Institute are striking and need your support! We are raising money to ensure that everyone - on permanent or temporary contracts - can afford to strike if they want to.
We are fighting to defend our pensions and for the future of our profession. Employers want to end guaranteed pension benefits. All the financial risk will be placed on the employees and a typical lecturer will lose £10,000 a year in retirement.
This is more than an individual matter. Universities are nothing without great teachers and researchers. But why would brilliant graduates choose to work in a sector with an ever-rising workload and student numbers, no real increase in pay relative to inflation and an uncertain pension? The Prime Minister has described the current fees regime as 'one of the mst expensive systems of university tuition in the world'. Yet most of this money seems to be being spent on 'hardware' - buildings and equipment to attract students in a competitive market.
The funds that we raise will be spent to ensure that every striker who needs to can claim at least the living wage in London of £81.60 per day. Those on temporary and casual contracts will have priority, and the funds will be distributed according to union guidelines on need.
