Costa Rica Homeless Ministry - Faith Road Mission

Many of you joined me in reaching out to the homeless of San Jose Costa Rica on January 5th when many were facing cold temperatures that left homeless men, women, and children wondering if they would survive. Because of your generosity in raising $3300 my brother Obed and I were able to begin feeding 65 people a day, once a day, and going out daily to visit them on the streets. The purpose was two-fold. 1. to provide for their immediate needs of food, blankets, and warmer clothing. AND 2. To build relationships that point them to Jesus Christ.
You might wonder, well how much can $3300 do when your looking at feeding 65 people per day and an estimated 5,000 people on the streets? Well we praise the Lord that to date we have fed close to 5,000 meals, given out lots of clothing, and our team is becoming well known in the dark streets of San Jose. We have also been able to provide some medicine, and also to reach out to some women in the streets who are pregnant. When someone is struggling with addictions our team helps locate a facility for them to go to and helps them to get there. We have one team member that is a trained EMT and can provide some basic first aid when needed. One team member lived on the streets for 25 years and has a relationship with many already, what an asset! The team in Costa Rica consists of Obed, his wife Jackeline, and others who have become interested and involved in the work. Total we now have a team of 10 people working out of the compassion of their hearts to minister to the homeless. $3300, took us from January 5 and will take us to the end of March 2018! God is good. We want to reach all of the homeless but we know that its not possible so we faithfully reach out to mostly the same 65 people daily with provision and hope. Our dream is for that to steadily grow!
Daniel are you moving to Costa Rica? The answer is No, but I wish! I love Costa Rica but God has me at Crossroads Center Rescue Mission in Hastings Nebraska and I love it! Crossroads has given me the training and experience that I feel I can pass on to Costa Rica. I feel called here and I do not see a change in working there. Its wonderful because I can work alongside the Costa Ricans from Nebraska to help reach out. I will serve as a team leader in the USA and Costa Rica as we move forward but will continue on in my calling at Crossroads. Crossroads has been generous in allowing me to go to Costa Rica this year.
So why are we trying to raise more money? Well we are not finished! Not too long ago, through brainstorming, the team in Costa Rica came up with the Name: Faith Road Mission Costa Rica. This name is not only to help develop a way to bring homelessness awareness to the City of San Jose, but it is also a commitment to continue to reach out with the Gospel, bringing people to faith in Jesus Christ, further more it represents a continued commitment not to ignore the needs of the poor in the city streets of San Jose. When people live around extreme poverty it is easy to become de-sensitized to it and to live life as usual, our hopes are to lead by example, and to raise awareness. We set the goal of $4,000 to help support 3 more months of ministry and to help take us to the next steps in continuing this work.
"The King will reply, whatever you did for the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. Matthew 25:40-45
Our next steps are:
1. continued outreach to the homeless, this includes the feeding program, gospel outreach, and the dream of a shelter where we can take people to be ministered to.
2. begin to develop organization for long term ministry, including a 501c in the USA, building an outreach team in the USA and Costa Rica, and speaking to churches and organizations in Costa Rica to raise local support and awareness.
3. right now we have set a goal to fund one year ministry, this campaign will take us through the month of June.
How can you be involved?
Pray: We are seeking prayer warriors. Helping the homeless is difficult and tiring work, especially for those like Obed that go out daily to the streets. We are asking the Lord to do mighty things. Pray that people in San Jose would look upon the homeless with compassion and respect, a heart to reach out. In our time working in San Jose we have heard reports from the homeless of people urinating on, desecrating on, and physically emotionally and sexually abusing the homeless as they lay vulnerable on the dark night sidewalks of San Jose. One man said, "In all my life I've never experienced something so evil". Please pray for the homeless and for this work.
Give: Its always something that creates a humble attitude in me when I ask people to give. Many thoughts go through my mind. But when I remember those that I met on the streets, the Lord gives me courage, and I am able to ask excitedly on their behalf. And so I am asking if the Lord lays it on your heart would you give? Our goal is $4,000 this time but we are trying to fund the remainder of this year which takes around $10,000. We are also seeking the help of anyone who would help to purchase land and a building, or to purchase land and help put up a building. Our dream is a center for the homeless to receive ministry, a place to live, and to help them to move forward in their life off of the streets.
GO!: We would love to take you along. Some of our most incredible experiences of the Lord at work in our lives is when we go out to the hurting, and we minister to them. Would you go to Costa Rica? Would you be the one holding the hand of a homeless man, woman, or child and placing food in it as you pray for them and share with them?
