Hello everyone! I'll start off by saying this- anyone that knows me well enough knows how much I deplore asking anyone for anything...ever. I'm incredibly uncomfortable in doing so and would much rather be on the "giving" side of the equation. If I have 2 and you want or need 1, it's yours. Heck, if I have half and you have none then it's also yours and I'll make do without. It's this sense of altruism passed down from my parents and other respected role models in my life that have led me to a career in, and passion for, the lifesaving worlds of Fire/EMS and Ocean Rescue. And it's the latter of these stated loves that I'm humbly asking for your help with today.
Every summer season the Outer Banks of North Carolina sees a massive influx of tourists and the requisite number of lifeguards to provide overwatch and security to the swelled beaches. The job and responsibility of lifesaving can be a very rewarding and demanding one on so many levels. From the elation of reuniting a lost and scared child with their family to the emotional trainwreck of trying to breathe life into that very same child you just pulled from the water, it takes a very special kind of person to willingly sign up for such unknowns. This is where constant and physically strenuous training comes into play. Anything less than 100% effort to keep the body and mind fit for the tasks of lifesaving is unacceptable. The fruition of these training efforts culminate in the annual Regional and National lifesaving competitions hosted by the U.S.L.A., the governing body of lifegaurds in the U.S. These competitions pit the best of the best, the most physically capable and committed lifesavers, in various run/swim/paddle/rescue events. Think of it as the Olympics of the lifesaving world. It takes countless hours of pain, sweat and tears to hone the skills necessary to compete at such a high level. But everything of worth has an associated cost. And that cost has proven substantial and prohibitive over the years. This is where my sheepish request for your assistance comes into play. We need some scratch. Some moolah. Some dolla dolla bills. I have taken on large portions of the costs over the years to get as many competitors to represent Corolla and the OBX as possible, to the financial detriment of myself and my family. And this isn't a complaint, merely showing that it's been worth every penny.
2 days of travel, 2-3 days of comp., hotels, food, gas, NOT WORKING or making money plus spending hundreds upon hundreds of dollars, overtime paid to the guards who graciously and selflessly cover the shifts of the travel team, etc., can severely hamper engaging in these competitions. The first of these comps. is in the 2nd week of July at the regional South Atlantic Lifesaving Assoc. comp. held in Jax beach, Fl. Agencies from Virginia Beach down to Jax beach will vie for top honors. One month later at the same location is the national competition. Agencies from all over the contiguous U.S. plus Hawaii will battle it out in a televised 3 day romp that really showcases top-notch athletes from this grand country. So, please, if you appreciate the work done by these lifesavers and want to be a part of our support team I would highly encourage and appreciate any assistance you can provide.
