CORNISH BARBARIANS (CBGC)  x MAN DOWN CORNWALL

**Please note, this fundraiser is in aid of Man Down Cornwall. Gareth Netherton is the Treasurer for Cornish Barbarians Pilot Gig Club, the organisers of this virtual event (which is why his name has been listed as "beneficiary" on this fundraising page). All funds raised here will go to the team at Man Down after the fundraising has concluded for this year's Festive Virtual Marathon. Please read on for more information about this year's event! Cheers, The CBGC committee: Will Marsh, Tristan Taylor, Mark Richards, Will Best, Gareth Netherton**

For 2020/2021, our third year, Cornish Barbarians Pilot Gig Club  are proud to be once again supporting an incredible, local community interest company: MAN DOWN CORNWALL  (CIC Number 12356174) through our festive marathon event.

Man Down help meet the emotional and mental health needs of men in Cornwall, they work to prevent suicide in Cornwall and beyond, and they make a real difference in giving individuals their identity back. Read more about their amazing work here.

Last year, the 56 Cornish Barbarian rowers who completed our festive marathon row on 28th December 2019 from Gorran to Falmouth raised just shy of £8K for Man Down  - a truly humbling effort. Whilst we've set £8K as a target this year to see if we can beat our raise from 2019, we're also conscious of how difficult the past few months have been financially for so many of you. As such, if you'd like to support this challenge then simply spreading the word would be a huge help. Any and all funds raised for Man Down at a time like this will be an added extra over the festive period.

Whilst we're not able to organise an epic, mass-participation coastal row this year (because of COVID-19), we'll instead be inviting rowers and sportspeople from across the country to complete a virtual marathon over the festive period. If you're reading this and would like to take part as well, please get in touch.

THE 2020/2021 FESTIVE VIRTUAL MARATHON

As with our previous challenges, the 2020/2021 challenge will still take place in the thick of winter, on one of the shortest days of the year.

Most of our participants will be completing their challenge on the 2nd or 3rd of January 2021, but a few may choose a date at the end of December 2020 for their own attempt.

We'll be inviting rowers from all codes (Gig Rowers, Sliding Seat Rowers, Coastal Rowers, Indoor Rowers etc), runners and cyclists to complete one of the following "virtual" challenges from their own home, gym or club:

Option 1) Row 42195m (a marathon) on a rowing machine

Option 2) Run an entire marathon (42.2KM / 26.2 miles)

Option 3) Cycle 100KM (62.15 miles)

Option 4) In keeping with our usual "marathon row", members of the same rowing club will be able to row an on-water marathon on their local river or out of their local harbour with a crew from their own club.

Each participant who successfully completes their Festive Virtual Marathon will be deemed to have "earned their stripes". They'll be awarded an honorary Cornish Barbarians Pilot Gig Club vest with their very own club number and - much more importantly - they'll have helped to raise awareness and funds for an incredible cause.
