The Lower Derwent Valley NNR

It's three years since the formation of the Friends of the Lower Derwent Valley – a charitable incorporated organisation, with the aims of working alongside and enabling others to conserve, research and promote the LDV NNR and surrounding area.
A huge amount of hard work has achieved great success over that time – fuelled by additional support via cards, calendars and log purchases. The ‘Friends’ have also been successful in securing private donations, including one that went on to provide two new tern rafts which were instantly colonised and resulted in the first successful breeding record for the reserve, and have secured various grants and donations to further the Swift conservation project in local villages. They have also provided the third-party contribution of £4500 to the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, allowing them to unlock £45,000 of visitor improvements to Wheldrake Ings, with an upgrade to the main access track, replacement of Swantail Hide and additional up-to-date interpretation panels.
However they are now looking to extend their efforts further and to increase their funds along the way, to help support other projects in the local area – with the aims of:
- Providing Sand Martin nesting banks
- Additional Common Tern nesting platforms
- Purchasing and re-creating traditional floodplain meadows for Corncrake management
- Satellite tracking migratory bird populations.
In order to deliver these new and exciting projects and improvements in the valley, and with potential land purchase in the near future, they have decided to launch this Go Fund Me campaign. They are looking to raise £10,000 in the next few months – which may seem a lot – but with nearly 1000 followers between the LDV Facebook, Twitter and Blog accounts that’s only £10 each! Help us to help them make a real difference to the wildlife and people who visit the site – the more we can raise the more we can secure for future generations. Land acquisition opportunities this autumn mean we have a real opportunity to make an exciting change in conserving, protecting and enhancing the LDV NNR which contains the only regular, self-sustaining population of English Corncrakes - but we need to act quickly.
