The Ancestral Cacao Reclamation Project aims to develop and implement
indigenous lead research to document and preserve the traditional and
original ways to work with the sacred Cacao medicine, including rituals,
cultivation, and preparation of the sacred medicine of Cacao. Independent
funding is needed to investigate, document and share this important part of
our history. The project is coordinated by Despertar del Camino Sagrado
(Awakening the Sacred Ways) in partnership with the Intercultural and
Indigenous Peoples University: Amawtay Wasi, in Ecuador.
This project will:
- Study and gather ethno-archaeological information to inform local
practices and methods;
- Support changing perspectives;
- Influence academic practice and empower local indigenous people who
are still using and cultivating this traditional medicine.
Archeologists have found documentation that the Cacao Medicine has played
a significant role in the lives and rituals of local indigenous people in Ecuador
for more than 5,000 years. We believe it is imperative to preserve the right of
local indigenous people to co-develop this research, utilizing their own
methodologies, Instead of conducting an investigation that is primarily based
on western and Euro-centric methodologies, which historically lead to the
perpetuation cultural appropriation, exploitation and oppressive power
dynamics between academics, economic structures and local indigenous
communities.

Field work in the Upper Amazon, including interviews, visits to
indigenous communities, archaeological research, and conference
development to document and promote traditional methods of working
with this sacred medicine.
