In January of next year, I will be travelling with my school to India as part of the school's community and Ignatian service program. Our trip involves visiting the cities of Kolkata, Jaipur, Varanasi and Mumbai in order to offer our services to those who truly need it, the marginalised members of the Indian community.
As recently as 2012, the Indian government stated that around 270 million people in India are living on less than $1.25 a day. This equates to around 1 in 5 people in India being below the poverty line. The immersion that I will be taking part in won't be able to remedy this number, however we hope that we will be able to go some way to improving the lives of those who are less fortunate, by providing our time, effort and hopefully resources, to disadvantaged communities and families in Inda.
Whilst in India, my schoolmates and I are hoping to be able to help many different groups of disadvantaged people. Our immersion will involve working in schools for disabled children and homes for elderly and disabled men in Kolkata, working in the brickfields in Jaipur, and working amongst the Jesuits in Varanasi.
Much of our work will involve providing resources such as educational supplies to orphinages and schools, as well as donating funds to organisations such as the Jesuits, who will use the money to continue the fantastic work they do to help the marginalised. In order to make my immersion as successful and meaningful as possible, the school has asked me to raise the small amount of $800 to help benefit those in India. Any amount of money donated would be greatly appreciated, and will go directly to supporting those in India who are less fortunate.
I cannot thank you enough for your support.
