Congressional App Challenge - D.C. Trip

The Congressional App Challenge is the most prestigious prize in student computer science. Our app and team were fortunate enough to be selected as Louisiana’s 3rd Congressional District winners of the 2019 Congressional App Challenge by a panel of expert judges including computer science and software professionals from McNeese State University, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Louisiana in coordination with Congressman Clay Higgins’ office.

As the winners, we have been invited to Washington D.C., to showcase our winning app at #HouseofCode in the US Capitol Building on March 24th. We’ll have the chance to meet our Congressional Representatives, see our app displayed, meet with important members of the tech community and connect with other coders from around the country.

Our goal is to raise $9,000 to help fund travel, hotel, meals and transportation costs for us 4 team members and 4 chaperones while in D.C.

We created a depression/suicide prevention mobile application called HappyBytes, in which the app gives users ‘bytes’ of inspirational messages that will hopefully make them feel better, as well as provide additional information and links that are related to depression and suicide. Below is a link to our video, detailing the work we put in to make our vision a reality, as well as our application’s functionality.

The goal of the Congressional App Challenge is for students, grades 6-12, to create a mobile application that solves an issue that they see prevalent in their community. Our team chose to tackle depression and suicide prevention as suicide is the 10th leading cause of death for all ages. Each year suicide takes the lives of over 44,965 people in America alone and alarmingly the rates have continued to increase each year.  We plan to use our coding abilities to connect individuals with suicide prevention and other local mental health resources.

Please help us raise the funds needed to represent our Congressional District in this honor.  THANK YOU!!!
