Reporting from Congo’s forgotten war

Il 22 marzo  del 2020 sarei dovuta partire per la Repubblica Democratica del Congo. La pandemia ha cambiato tutto, ma credo che andare adesso sia ancora più importante. Seguite il mio viaggio a febbraio e continuate a sostenermi.

I should have leaved for the Democratic Republic of the Congo on 22nd of March last year. Covid-19 has forced me to postpone the reportage. However, I don't give up. I belive that reporting the undderreported is now even more important.  Follow my trip in February and continue to supporting me. 

I will travel across the East of the country to document a fierce and forgotten war. Many are asking me if it is really worth taking such a high risk to tell distant stories, to go through a territory where armed militias dominate and where few journalists penetrate. Silence makes that conflict every day more tragic. And that conflict is not a faraway story, but concerns us closely. Goods and men travel, economies influence each other - and Congo DRC is a country from which we get minerals essential for our daily life, from coltan to gold, from tin to cobalt. People move, lifestyles change, the effects of wars and humanitarian emergencies impact thousands of kilometers away, like those of violence on the environment. There are few things today not influenced by what happens beyond State borders. Neglecting what is happening in the heart of Africa is not enough to keep us safe from the effects of a humanitarian crisis or a war; knowing, on the other hand, allows us to make decisions, which are economic - buying, investing; political - by voting, for example; or social. Knowledge allows us to choose what world we want to live in.  Your contribution will be used to produce an independent report and to guarantee, as far as possible, my safety.

ITALIANO. Andrò nell’Est del Paese, nell’epicentro dell’epidemia del virus Ebola, per documentare una guerra feroce e dimenticata.  In molti mi stanno chiedendo se valga davvero la pena correre un rischio così alto per raccontare storie lontane, attraversare un territorio dove spadroneggiano milizie armate e dove pochi giornalisti si addentrano.    E' il silenzio a rendere  ogni giorno quel conflitto più drammatico e quel conflitto non è una storia lontana, ma ci riguarda da vicino.  Viaggiano merci e uomini, le economie si influenzano - ed il Congo è un Paese da dove arrivano minerali fondamentali per nostra vita quotidiana, dal coltan all'oro, allo stagno, al cobalto. I popoli si spostano, gli stili di vita mutano, gli effetti di guerre e emergenze umanitarie si fanno sentire a migliaia di chilometri di distanza, come quelli della violenza sull'ambiente. Poco c'è oggi che non sia globale, ovvero influenzato da ciò che accade oltre i confini dei singoli Stati.   Non sapere quello che accade nel cuore dell'Africa non basta a tenerci al riparo dagli effetti di una crisi umanitaria o di una guerra; sapere, invece, ci permette di prendere delle decisioni, che siano economiche – comprando, investendo; politiche – votando, per esempio; o di impegno sociale. Sapere ci permette di scegliere in che mondo vogliamo vivere. Il vostro contributo servirà per produrre un reportage indipendente, garantendo, per quanto possibile, la mia sicurezza.

What will be the outcome of this trip?
- A written and photographic reportage in which I will not only try to document the ongoing crisis, but also to explain why it affects us (English and Italian);
- The launch of an online project with the goal of continuing to follow constantly what is happening in the Democratic Republic of the Congo;
- A video story

ABOUT ME

As a correspondent of Devex, a US news outlet leader in information on international development and humanitarian relief, I covered the European Union from Brussels and the United Nations from Rome and around the world.
