I have been given the opportunity to attend and present at the Summit on Research and Teaching of Young Adult Literature in Las, Vegas in June! This affords me the chance to work closely with some of the most amazing authors, scholars, and educators in the country in regards to literature and classrooms. I could not be prouder that they selected my panel for inclusion in the conference!
After four years in Keller, I have noticed that our students need help understanding failure and plan Bs. They invest so much of their heart and souls in to their dreams that they sometimes find themselves lost when their dreams come crashing down around them. My panel addresses this concept and analyzes how the use of YA contemporary fiction can open up discourse about their lives by connecting to characters like themselves. I cannot wait to expand on this idea as I meet and discuss with fellow scholars.
Unfortunately, this trip is expensive and there are little funds available right now for professional development conferences. As I did not know I'd have the chance to go, I did not request a PD budget. This is where you come in. I need help making this trip happen. It's looking like roughly $1500 for flight, hotel, conference fees, and materials at the conference. I have to make my decision by April 25th in order to get all the benefits. I appreciate this so very much.
The benefits of this opportunity do no die with me. I plan to bring back as much information and knowledge as possible to Keller High School, our ELA department, as well as the district. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
I love teaching. This really will help me not only grow as an educator, but it will allow me to open doors for my students that they may not have known needed opening. For that we will be forever grateful.
