Nicole's Conference Travel & Accommodations Fund

HI! I'm Nicole Archambault!

If you're reading this, you may know me on Twitter @lavie_encode.

I'm a self-taught front-end web developer turned EdTech entrepreneur.

I blog, podcast, and created an online course and coaching program  for new self-taught coders. I'm also a freeCodeCamp Top Contributor, Treehouse Success Story, and brand new conference speaker. :D

I LOVE the newbie coder community. I spend a lot of time giving back to the community that helped me get my first job. Now, I help others get theirs.

In essence, I now work at the intersection of Education, Technology, and Psychology. I want to know how coders think, and how they learn new information. My work and presence are especially important being from an extremely intersectionally underrepresented group in tech (Black and Wampanoag Native American)

I support new coders through helping them to understand their own brains, build strong problem solving skills, gain context for the web development industry, and win over employers for their first jobs!

So, I hope that gives you a good sense of who I am. Now, let's talk about what I'm here for, and what I need from you.

Can we talk about conferences for a sec?

Conferences are expensive. REALLY expensive. Unfairly expensive. And if you're not employed by a company, it makes the conferences inaccessible.

It's not just the tickets—it's the whole package. Accommodations, travel, food, etc.

BUT, we need them, especially as self-taught coders. Especially when we know *specifically* what we're going there for. Which after several years as a technologist, I finally do. :)

SO—

I'm raising funds for conferences travel and accommodations for 5 conferences.

A few I am even speaking at (funny, huh? except not), and a few I'm attending for personal and professional development.

NOTE: I already have tickets to each! This is ONLY to get and stay there for the event.

I'm on fixed income and not employed by a company, so booking Airbnbs (hotels are usually like $150+ a night ugh) is going to get pricey real quick.

This list is fixed and the conferences/dates will not be changing—only updated if something comes through with my needs.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BOOK ACCOMMODATIONS DIRECTLY, no problem at all! I'll give you my details, just let me know whatever you need. It makes me uncomfortable enough just asking for money, so this is actually preferable. :)

HERE ARE THE CONFERENCES FOR WHICH I NEED ACCOMMODATIONS:

Codeland Conference
NYC—July 21-23

NEED:
Accommodations (2 nights, driving from Boston)

The conference is in NYC, which is super expensive, BUT I can get a cheapish (maybe ~$150-200/night?) place in New Jersey if I find a roommate. But as of right now, it's just going to be for me.

Abstractions II
Pittsburgh, PA—August 21 to 24

NEED:
Accommodations (3 nights, driving from Boston)
I'm actually speaking at Abstractions, but they don't cover accommodations. I *do* currently have a request for additional consideration, but as it's a 3-day event, I'm not sure it will be approved. If so, I'll post and adjust my goal. Also, parking is going to be an additional cost.

JavaScript and Friends
Columbus, OH—August 1 to 3

NEED:
Travel and accommodations (2 nights, flying from Boston)
I'm speaking at JS and Friends too, but accommodations could be iffy. Waiting to hear back, will adjust goals as needed! Either way, having a small stipend would be an immense help.

NOTE: If you or your company would like to sponsor my travel/accommodations to JS and Friends, they DO have a sponsorship level for this! Just reach out to the nice folks at JS&F here: [email redacted]. :)

Podcast Movement
Orlando, FL—August 12-17
NEEDS:
Travel and accommodations (5 nights, flying from Boston)

PM recently moved from Philadelphia to Orlando, making it much more inaccessible. Last year was my first year there, and I found SO MANY RESOURCES and connections that helped me establish direction for the La Vie en Code Podcast.

If possible, I need travel and accommodations. But I'll take whatever I can get, I just need to make sure I'm there and visible. :)

Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing
Orlando, FL—September 30-October 5
NEEDS:
Travel and accommodations (5 nights, flying from Boston)

I'll be speaking on a panel with Native American Women in Computing at GHC for my third year. Same deal: no travel or accommodations. :(

Thank you SO much for your consideration, and I look forward to seeing many of you at these conferences in 2019! :D Hopefully, next year, I won't need so much help. Hopefully.
