Kids need computers during Covid-19

English Text:  (Български текст долy)

Hi there, I’m Anna-Sophia. I was born and raised in New York City, but my parents are originally from Bulgaria. I grew up speaking Bulgarian at home and visited Bulgaria every summer.

This past spring, I like many students, had to adapt to learning online. I'm sure we can all agree it wasn’t easy. But imagine having to do online school without even having a computer. This is what Joro had to do. I heard about him from my grandmother, who is a retired social worker in Bulgaria.  She told me about a 15-year-old boy Joro, who lives with his grandfather in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. Joro did not have a computer and had to take all of his courses on his smartphone. With some of my savings. and the support of my parents, family, and friends, we were able to purchase a laptop for Joro, so he can get the education he deserves. (Joro is seen with his new laptop in the picture above)

There are many other kids like Joro that need our help. The Bulgarian ministry of education reported that 70,000 students did not have the resources for online education. This is close to 10% of all students in Bulgaria. Additionally, the poverty line in Bulgaria is 363 leva (approximately $220 ) per month while a computer suitable for on-line education is 600-800 leva. 1.6 million Bulgarians live below the poverty line, with this number increasing due to the economic crisis caused by Covid.

Covid is far from over and while the school year in Bulgaria has started in person, schools are already transitioning to remote education as outbreaks of Covid appear. Under newly adopted rules, schools will also be going remote to contain the spread of the seasonal flu.

A report from the Brookings Institution indicates that due to disruption in education during the pandemic, children are beginning this school year with only 70% of the reading skills they had last year, and only 50% of their math skills. It is vital our generation is equipped with the means to succeed. This is especially critical in a country like Bulgaria whose most important resource is its people.

We are calling on you to help other kids like Joro all over Bulgaria. So please donate anything you can to this GoFundMe page and share Joro’s story with all of your friends. Unfortunately, we can’t solve the problem but we can do our part.

All donations will be used to purchase equipment and/or internet access for students and schools in need in Bulgaria. I will use lists compiled by organizations in Bulgaria to identify recipients. I welcome others who can not only contribute financially but also help with logistics to contact me. A full accounting of the use of the donations will be provided here and on a website I am about to launch.

Thank You!

Note: Per GoFundMe rules, as I am not yet 18, withdrawals and use of collected funds will be overseen by my parents.
