About the Community Hope Wall

Team Hope, which consists of four people: Blanche Barajas, Nisha McSwane-Franco , Daisy Vargas, and myself are reclaiming a wall in the city of Pasco, that will convey a unifying message of hope and community.

We need your help raising money to pay a muralist to paint our Community Hope Wall which is the west wall located at Vinny's Bakery in Pasco, Wa.

Our goal is to raise $3000 to pay our muralist and an estimated $1000 for the supplies needed for the project.

A tragedy took place at Vinny's Bakery a few years ago that left a wound in our community. There was division, protests, turmoil and political and cultural unrest, Vinny's business was on the decline as a result of the incident. The community came together to keep his doors open. Vinny even became a national celebrity featured on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives- his signature Cuban sandwich and sweetbreads made daily at his Panderia draw in steady crowds these days.

Vinny always gives me sweet bread to take to the youth in detention, he knows the youth that I work with, not personally but culturally. He knows that our youth need to know that they are cared for and understood.

A lot of youth in detention find it hard or impossible to be heard, seen, or most importantly, felt. Conversely,  a lot of my friends in my community find it challenging to relate to the stories and troubles of youth that were not raised in the same conditions or circumstances. So earlier this year (2019), we started inviting community members from diverse backgrounds inside to swap stories and inspiration with our youth. It gives the youth a few more examples of possibilities, it gives our community friends a better understanding of our youth and how we can all work together creatively.

The Community Hope Wall serves as a bridge-builder in that light. We even painted the Art Dojo purple, like the ninja turtle Donatello. He was the wise turtle that solved his problems with creativity and innovation. But going deeper than that, we tend to see a lot of division over the colors red and blue. Not just on the streets but above ground, too, in politics. Red and blue make purple. That's a bit of an artistic touch, but its an attempt at something greater. It's definitely not to get folks to begrudgingly abandon their values for the greater good, but to bring our collective inner-good to the forefront so that we might all work together more constructively, that is the hope.

Youth in the juvenile justice center will help design the mural from inside the Art Dojo and our artist will paint the mural on Vinny's Bakery's west wall.

But it doesn't stop there. The spirit of this project aims to be celebrated by all of the citizens of Pasco and beyond, we are going to make the day that we commemorate the unveiling of the mural an honorary holiday called "Pasco Community Day of Hope". The actual date of this holiday is still to be determined.

Nonetheless, Pasco Community Day of Hope will be a holiday for all to celebrate and observe all things to be hopeful for from the air in our lungs to the overall wellness of our friends in our community!

The Community Hope Wall mural will be unveiled and commemorated on a Saturday, November 2nd, 2019. We are calling this day "Pasco Community Day of Hope", the intention is to have the community come together and celebrate all things to be hopeful for from the air in our lungs to the wellness of our friends in the community. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend Pasco Community Day of Hope in the Pasco School District Booth Building parking lot located at 1215 W. Lewis Street, Pasco WA!
