Powering the Future of Common Roots Urban Farm

Who We Are:

Common Roots Urban Farm is made up of 17 city lots in the Broadway Fillmore neighborhood on Buffalo’s east side. Run by Terra Dumas and Josh Poodry, we began farming the land in 2012 with the support of the Farmer Pirates Cooperative. We now cultivate a 1/2 acre and grow over 35 varieties of vegetables and fruits using ecologically sustainable methods.

We are committed to being a vibrant, positive part of our community by providing access to healthy food at affordable prices. To make our produce available to as many people as possible, we accept WIC and Senior FMNP checks, as well as SNAP benefits. We believe our small farm is an integral part of urban revitalization in Buffalo by restoring neglected vacant land into a beautiful place our neighbors can take pride in.

Bringing life back to our urban soil is of the utmost importance to us. Each year we incorporate locally made compost into the soil, increasing the organic matter and in turn the biological activity. We have in place a permanent bed system enabling us to limit the amount of tillage and disturbance of the complex ecosystem that exists in the soil.

Our produce is available at our on-site Farmstand, the North Buffalo Farmers Market, and through our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) membership program.

Accomplishments:

We have come a long way over our eight growing seasons. Starting with just a wheelbarrow and a few hand tools we now have a variety of high quality, scale appropriate, battery operated tools. By reinvesting most of our profits each year we now have a large hoophouse for season extension and heirloom tomato production, a Farmstand and an on-site tool shed. We also had a well drilled so that we have access to clean, abundant ground water which feeds our irrigation system and our new produce washing area.

Goals:

To run our well, we need power. Without electricity at the farm we have relied on a gasoline generator which is not only noisy but also very unsustainable. So far, the option of running electricity to the farm has been too cost prohibitive. Our ultimate goal with this fundraiser is to not only bring electricity to the farm this Spring but to make it sustainable as well. Using solar panels to harness the power of the sun, we can ensure that Common Roots Urban Farm will be viable well in to the future.

Your generous donation will not only help us continue to provide healthy food to our community in a sustainable way, but will also promote urban agriculture as fundamental in Buffalo’s revitalization efforts. We appreciate your support. Thank you.
