Two years ago, the portable dance floor owned by Maine Fiddle Camp and used at the Common Gound Fair was stolen. This was in 2020, after the start of the pandemic, at a time when lumber prices were skyrocketing. A trailer full of usable siding boards was apparently too tempting to pass up.
Nothing was done about this for two years since Maine Fiddle Camp and the Common Ground Fair went virtual for the pandemic.
But now it's 2022, and in-person events (including dancing) are happening again. Several contra dance series have restarted, including some here in Maine.
The Kennebec Contra Dance is ready to restart, but we can't use our regular hall yet. So we figured: it's summer. We can dance outside. But the portable floor we need doesn't exist.
We got talking to Doug Protsik and Jeff Raymond at Maine Fiddle Camp about what it would take to build a replacement floor. Volunteers, time and money, of course. The Kennebec Contra Dance Committee provided the volunteers, and Jens Dill put up the money to buy the materials, and we got to work. We had just enough time to build the new floor and put it together for the first post-COVID Kennebec Contra Dance on August 13.
The floor you are dancing on is the result of a lot of effort, planning, and volunteer energy, from the KCD committee, Maine Fiddle Camp leaders, friends and neighbors. It also cost well over $5000. I
This is where you come in.
If you appreciate this dance floor, and if you appreciate the efforts of the Kennebec Contra Dance Committee to rebuild this dance floor, please consider contributing to pay the cost of the floor. The donations are tax-deductable, as the Kennebec Contra Dance is a 501(c)3 non-profit.
Money contributed to this fund will go first to pay back the cost of building the floor. If there is any additional money, it will go to the Kennebec Contra Dance bank account, in acknowledgement of the tremendous amount of volunteer effort the Committee put in.
KCD will use the funds for future projects, which may include the canopy that Jens is building to protect the floor from rain. We will provide a complete accounting of the disbursement of the funds to anyone who requests it.
KCD will donate the new floor to Maine Fiddle Camp, so it can be used as before, with the proviso that the KCD committee can use the floor rent-free when it wants to hold another outdoor dance.
This dance floor is a big asset to the dance community in Maine. Not only can it be used at Fiddle Camp and at the Common Ground fair, but it can be rented to other people and organizations who want to hold an outdoor dance.
We thank you for any contribution you can make to our community of dancers in Maine.
