About the Composer
Dr. Jasmine “Jazzie” Pigott is a tuba player, composer, singer, spoken word artist, and writer based in Baltimore, MD. Believing in the power of representation, Jasmine is a performer on a mission to empower the next generation of musicians of color. With this mission, she has developed an international presence, having toured as a soloist around the US, Costa Rica, and Colombia; and she has placed in numerous solo competitions, including first place in Peabody’s Yale Gordon Competition and bronze in the Leonard Falcone Tuba Student Competition (the first Black woman to place in the competition's 50-year history). In July 2022, she released her first EP, Revolution, celebrating representation of Black composers, musicians, and styles.
In addition to performing, Dr. Pigott is a composer and arranger. Her works have been performed by K-12, collegiate, and professional ensembles. In her compositions, Dr. Pigott regularly incorporates Black music styles into standard contemporary classical music. She has written works for orchestra, band, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. Her piece Against All Odds for brass ensemble (2021) was written for and premiered by the Chromatic Brass Collective in 2022 at the International Women’s Brass Conference and has been recorded by the Summit Brass at the Rafael Mendez Institute. In 2023, the Palisade Trumpet Collective commissioned and recorded her work for trumpet sextet, Midnight Escape for their album Sojourn (2024). Recently, she has incorporated her writing skills into composition through writing works for solo tuba or ensemble and spoken word. She has written and performed her three pieces for solo tuba and spoken word--Gateways (2022), Foundations (2023), and Reflections (2023) at the 2022 International Women’s Brass Conference, the Baltimore Museum of Art as a part of the Shriver Hall Concert Series, and the 2023 International Tuba and Euphonium Conference. Her first work for ensemble and spoken word was funded by the Huntington Arts Council and is to be premiered in November 2024 by the Long Island Philharmonic.
Dr. Pigott is currently a faculty member at the Peabody Preparatory, teaching low brass lessons and music theory to students in the Baltimore area, and she is the Adjunct Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Hofstra University for the 2024-2025 academic year. She has served on the faculty for the annual Los Angeles Philharmonic’s YOLA National Festival, teaching students from all around the country in an orchestra intensive, and at Ohio University as the Visiting Adjunct Professor of Tuba in the spring 2022 semester. Dr. Pigott holds degrees from Ithaca College (B.M.), Michigan State University (M.M.), and the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University (D.M.A.). Her teachers include Velvet Brown, Phil Sinder, David Earll, and Justin Benavidez.
