Comfort for Tom Beeler

The Beeler family has overcome some very trying times, but nothing so challenging as Tom’s liver disease. His doctors have deemed him ineligible for a liver transplant due to his overall condition.
After months of doctors appointments, tests, procedures, and hospitalizations, Tom declared his most earnest wish was to be home surrounded by his wife, children, family and friends, including his dogs. Tom’s children Ethan and Emily have been working every day for several months to support their father through all his medical care while finding ways to modify the house to address his and his wife Sue’s mobility limitations, as well as helping to manage their parents’ financial obligations through all this medical mayhem. They have spent over $8,000 so far, installing ramps and maintaining the property. They are 100% engaged with their parents’ well-being but also have busy careers and their own families to care for. As I am the closest relative, I have opted to move in with my uncle and aunt to help with this important transition in all their lives. For my part, I am having a hard time coming to terms with a world without my Uncle Tom. It feels like it all went by too fast.
On March 28, 2019, we were finally able to bring him home, and now the hard work has begun – providing Tom the hands-on care he needs to keep him comfortable. We have hospice providing nursing visits 2 days a week and home health aides 3 days a week, but that’s not nearly enough. We need at least 36 hours of additional hands-on care that is not provided by hospice. In-home care costs between $25 and $35 per hour. We hope that $15,000 will cover this care.
“Tom has always been very loving,” says his wife Sue, and we all agree this is his outstanding characteristic. From his family, to his friends, to every community he has inhabited, he has worked hard to be of service to all, while cracking jokes and playing with bad puns. The definition of a self-made man who could always do anything he wanted, he chose publishing as a career. He has been dedicated to bringing literature to older and visually impaired readers via audio and large print books since the 1970s.
More recently he was the editor for The Carroll County Independent and The Granite State News, which brought him in contact with lots of people and involved him in many community events. He has always loved engaging with people from all walks of life.
I’ve known my Uncle Tom to go the distance for any of his family and friends, so now we want to go the distance for him, and hope that you will join us. Just one hour of care makes a big difference.
