Twist - school comfort dog

Meet Twist. Twist is a one-year-old black lab. His training is complete and he is ready to join my school in the fall of 2020. He is a professionally trained dog that acts as a tool to a school administrator, counselor, teacher or other school staff member to foster a safe and effective environment for a student to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. He is trained to the highest level of basic obedience and taught to be comfortable and interact in the school environment on a daily basis.

For those of you who do not know me. I have been a special education teacher for eighteen years and have always loved what I do. I realize it is not the best time to ask for donations however, the more I researched the more I realized and believe Twist will provide comfort to our students and enhance their school day.

Canines have long held the title as man’s best friend. They’re lovable and loyal, and they can provide the gift of unconditional love. With this in mind, I did extensive research and wrote a proposal for my district to approve having a comfort dog in our building. Research is very clear about the benefits for people to interact with comfort dogs, across multiple settings (schools, hospitals, workplaces). A comfort dog at my school will help: lower stress/anxiety, improve attendance, improve academic performance, increase student socialization, and support a positive climate and culture.

Interquest School Counseling Assistance and Comfort Dogs, teach dogs a number of different ways to engage, interact with or calm a student and are taught to use their instincts and cues from their handler to assess the physical, mental and emotional state of each individual and tailor their interaction to meet the students' basic needs at that given time. Along with a school staff member who has also been taught how to work with their dog, the canine team works to foster a safe environment and relationship with a student so that effective counseling and school involvement can be achieved. A comfort dog is used for the general betterment of a school.

I would love to raise funds to get Twist as a comfort dog for the students at my school.  All donations will go to Interquest School Counseling Assistance and Comfort Dogs for the initial purchase of Twist. My family will take on the daily care and financial responsibility for him. We are also donating $500 towards the purchase of Twist.

Thank you in advance for considering.        -Karen
