THE INSPIRATION:
The inspiration came from my experience as a young brown girl growing up in the '90s. I was not aware of many inspiring women from around the world because I was never told about them. However, I was fortunate enough to be raised in an environment where I had the resources to seek such information. Many children do not have that luxury. Having lived in France for four years now, I have realised that this is a global issue and we need our children to know incredible women from the past and present. I needed an engaging and fun way through which the children could learn about these women, and a colouring book seemed like the best option!
THE GOAL:
-ASER (Annual Status of Education Report) states that 32.5% of girls drop out of school due to family constraints. According to the report, the presence of strong female role models could change the perceptions of parents and the community.
-The goal is primarily to inform children that no matter what their circumstance, they can achieve whatever they want in their life. And if they have role models from different backgrounds, races, sexual orientation, and nationalities, to look up to, we can motivate them to work towards their dreams. Even though this may seem challenging, I understand the importance of feeling represented. Especially because I never saw women like me being represented in the media when I was younger.
WHY A COLOURING BOOK?
-We wanted to make the process of learning about these women fun and interactive. But more importantly, when the child colours the different shades of skins on these women, she/he understands that success is, and can be inclusive of all races.
-Each page of the colouring book has the illustration of the woman and a short description of the woman's life below it.
WHERE THESE BOOKS BE AVAILABLE:
- The main distribution channel for the 1st phase of the project will be through online stores
-Specialized online children's books website like Children's Bookstore
- Established online retailers like Amazon
- After we achieve our target of 500 book sales, we hope to approach offline bookstores like Crossword
EXPENSES:
1) The graphic designer to design the sketch of these women- 1300 euros
2) Printing of the 1st batch of books- 1500 euros
3) Marketing of the books- 900 euros
4) A fee to the publisher- Not known yet
WHY WE NEED THE MONEY:
-My team and I are just recent graduates living in France which can get expensive. I have had this idea and been passionate about it for a very long time but money was always the limiting factor. If you decide to help, we believe you are not only full filling my dream but also contributing to making a social shift in the time of need.
REWARDS:
-Apart from contributing to gender representation, you could also be a part of these potentially beautiful books. With permission, we would like to include the donor's names at the back of the book.
- A part of the quarterly profits will go to an institution that promotes the education of young women. The name of the institution will be shared once our team has made an exhaustive list to select from.
MY OTHER PROJECT:
I created a community of women from all around the world. As part of this group women from different cultures discuss political, cultural and social issues they face in their countries and we try and find solutions together. It is an exclusive group for women and you can find it here.
