I’m a retired Ontario teacher, and this has been my third year volunteering at Hogar Bohio de Maria, a school in Medellin, Colombia.
The school has about 120 students who eat, sleep, play, and live on campus. Students are economically disadvantaged.
Resources are lacking. There are computers, but no science lab. Gym equipment is threadbare. There are no musical instruments and therefore no music program. Visual arts is confined to drawing and sometimes painting. The option to try things like sculpture or pottery is not there….yet.
As a teacher who has taught for more than 30 years in a first world country, such deficits bother me. However, due to the support of people like you, I have remained positive, and been able to make a difference. How? With funds raised, we bought new pillow cases and pillows for students to sleep on. School supplies were purchased, including books, textbooks, and pencil cases. Special events were held, such as pizza and hamburger day.
My next goal is to raise $5000 from corporations, friends, and people who are willing to make a difference , in order to pay for a complete facelift of the tired old playground.
Your help would sincerely be appreciated.
Help us raise our goal!!
