In memory of Jodie Evans, taken by breast cancer, we started a College Education Fund for her very smart and hard working 13 years son - Bohdan.
It is with great sadness that we would like to share the passing of Jodie Evans after a long and heartbreaking battle with breast cancer. Her life was taken too soon by cancer on May 10th, 2019, leaving behind her husband Cory and her young son Bohdan. Jodie's zest for life brought happiness to everyone that had the pleasure to know her. Her greatest joys were her son, wildlife, co-workers, & profession. Jodie was a caregiver to patients needing rehabilitation in NHC Healthcare. She loved her job and every day she brought her enthusiasm and passion for patients to care for them and help them get well. The memorial service organized by her workplace was very heart-warming, and showed how loved she was by her co-workers, patients, & her family.

Jodie’s wish was to create a great life for her son and save for his college education. Now she is no longer with us to make it happen. We can only imagine how hard it will be for a single father raising a growing teenager on one salary to do this on his own. Her husband, Cory, is a Public Safety Officer at the University of South Carolina Beaufort. He is hugely valued and respected by his colleagues, students, faculty, and staff members. Cory is a person who always does the right thing and loves his job taking care of safety along with other officers for the entire college community.

My name is Kasia Pawelek, and I was Jodie’s friend, and I am a Professor at the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB). Together with Sergeant Bruce Oliver, Cory’s colleague at USCB, we set up this fundraiser because we know how important education is to Cory & Jodie for their son. We also know how expensive it is and the increasing costs of attending college.
Being a Mathematics Professor, I asked Bohdan which subject is his favorite. He said it was always mathematics and now it is tight for the first place with sciences. He said that he has amazing teachers that make it challenging and applicable. I could see in the sparkle in his eyes that he loves to study, and he will achieve great things given an opportunity and guidance.
According to the College Board tuition, fees, room, and board in 2018 were on average, $21,370 per year. If the cost does not increase, which is unlikely given the trends, it makes a total of $85,480. Based on this data, we decided to set our goal for at least half of that cost $42,740 as we know Bohdan may receive scholarships and grants.
We collectively can make Jodie’s wish happen by donating to an Education Fund for her son. 100% of all collected funds will be deposited directly into the South Carolina Future Scholar Program Fund account with Jodie’s husband as an owner and her son a beneficiary. The funds are to be used for future college education for Bohdan.
