My name is Bryan Black and I am one of the most grateful people on the planet. My life was saved by college basketball. As I began to struggle with epilepsy and the condition continued to worsen, I searched for something to focus my thoughts and keen me grounded. For me, that was college basketball. The teams’ chess matches with each other on the hardwood are allegorical to the struggles those of us with epilepsy must overcome every day, and moreover, they represent the schools that give hope to us, educating people in neuroscience and new research endeavors to help improve the lives of people with epilepsy. I decided to write to the schools and tell them my story, how college hoops helps focus my brain and I have fewer seizures when watching it. Literally saving my life and slowing down my severe episodes. The response was overwhelming and nothing short of miraculous to me. Over 100 jerseys in a matter of months after my second extended hospital visit. And now at 281 after 2 brain surgeries to put an RNS stimulator on my brain, using technologies and people from these schools that also saved my life. I can’t think of a better way to show my gratitude for these amazing people than to bring all of the schools together with these jerseys that represent and embody everything they strive for...further nurturing the human mind. My dream is to travel all over the nation to arenas and demonstrate what this collection represents, going to games with purple epilepsy awareness gear and the teams’ jerseys on, helping people who are impacted by epilepsy know that we are not alone and that these schools are always striving to give us hope for a better tomorrow. Trouble is, my condition is severe enough that it makes it nearly impossible to focus on a specific task at hand and I lose my language and math abilities as part of my seizures, so I truly would love some professional help as far as how to tell my story and inspire hope in people impacted by epilepsy.
