Aloha family & friends! Colin & I need your help! Let me start by telling you our story.
Colin was born with a genetic kidney disease, called Alport's Syndrome. Alport syndrome is a genetic condition characterized by kidney disease, hearing loss, and eye abnormalities. People with Alport syndrome experience progressive loss of kidney function. Sadly, this day for Colin came quickly when he learned last March he was at 6% kidney function.
Colin has been on peritoneal dialysis every night at home for about 8 months as he completed medical evaluations for a kidney transplant at Queen's transplant center in Honolulu and Mayo Clinic in Arizona.
Colin is a great candidate for a transplant physically, however the expense of a transplant has been a struggle. Even with our great federal employee insurance plan (+ medicare) we are looking at a cost of $6,000-$8,000 for surgery. Additionally, Colin will be required to stay on Oahu (We live on the Big Island) or Arizona for up to 3 months. This will cost us between $5,000 to $15,000. After transplant, Colin will be required to take daily immunosuppressant drugs for the rest of his life. This are extremely costly drugs, in the range of hundreds to over a thousand a month.
LATEST UPDATE: Colin’s wife Sarah is a match! After doing some research, they both decided getting tested and going through the evaluation process at Mayo Clinic would be the best option as family would be close. They were both approved December 2018 and have scheduled surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona for January 23, 2019!
Sarah’s job is furloughed with the federal government and she hasn’t received a paycheck since late December. As surgery nears, the financial burden increases. It is the beginning of a new health care year which means new deductible!
