• “It’s immediately clear how effortlessly this consummate actress channels early-20th-century French novelist Colette…Holt simply embodies the rebellious character in all her (ever-so-French) self-confidence, vulnerability and sensual charm.”—SF Examiner

• “A breathtaking hour and fifteen minutes. I dare you to take your eyes off this worldly femme fatale with the musical accent.”—Theatre Storm

THE PRODUCTION

This smart and funny solo play tells the story of the famed and infamous French novelist’s passionate quest as a writer, a woman, a pioneer for social change, and as a lover. Colette is one of France’s most famous writers, best known for her novella Gigi, which became a musical that won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Before Colette’s exquisite writing was accepted as classic, the author was shunned by polite society for her scandalous life, her many affairs with women and men, appearing on stage scantily clad in vaudeville, and her refusal to compromise her pursuit of personal freedom. Colette produced more than 50 works of fiction, memoirs, and plays. The play was originally inspired by the book Shipwrecked on a Traffic Island and Other Previously Untranslated Gems by Colette, translated by Zack Rogow and Renée Morel. Colette's life has resonated with audiences, for her breaking new ground for women's empowerment, her respect for nature, her forays into sexual liberation, and her refusal to give in to the moralistic reactions to her life choices.
