Cola and John's Winter Rent

Since moving to Chicago earlier this year to start medical school, I noticed a couple, Cola and John, sleeping at the street corner outside my apartment. Today I watched Cola cry as her and John's belongings were taken by a CPD officer because someone complained about them peacefully occupying that space. Cola told me her story and gave me permission to share it (as well as permission to share the photo). Cola and John lost their jobs and were evicted from their place when the pandemic hit. She's a loving mother, a trauma survivor, and is living through health complications. John has been trying to find work but explained that convictions from his past are a large barrier in the hiring process. Cola explained they must find housing before Winter comes in order to regain custody of their young son (who Cola boasted is the smartest 5-year old and is known for giving unprompted hugs to strangers). I'm asking for donations on behalf of Cola and John. These donations will be used to secure a place for their family to live through the Chicago Winter. They need the funds as soon as possible as it's getting colder and colder by the day. I’m not the best writer, but I’m trying to express how much this would mean to Cola and John. They are resilient members of our community. For those involved at Northwestern Medicine, Cola and John are a part of OUR community.
