If you are blessed to know our friend Mairead, then you know that she is loyal, caring and always willing to help others, irrespective of her own needs. Well now it is time to turn the tables around and for us to help her. Mairead is currently in the National Rehabilitation Hospital, aiming to get home to her two beautiful children and husband in the next few weeks. Here is Mairead’s story, in her own words…
“On the 18th of January 2021, our lives changed forever. An MRI scan revealed a tumour on my brain. On further investigations in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, I was told I had a large tumour on my brain and my only chance of survival was an intricate, lengthy brain operation. This took place on the 4th of February. It was successful & the amazing neurosurgical team in Beaumont Hospital removed 95% of the tumour, a glioma Grade 2.
Unfortunately, I suffered a stroke post op, which left me paralysed on the left side of my body. At age 34, this was not something I had ever imagined I would be going through. Three weeks after my surgery, I was transferred to the Rehabilitation Unit in Merlin Park, Galway, where I made great progress. On the 28th of April I was transferred to the NRH. At present I have daily physiotherapy, Speech and Language Therapy & Occupational Therapy which are helping me on my road to recovery. I am working on regaining better movement and power in my left hand. It is tiring and takes a lot of work, but I am determined, and I will get there! The Speech & Language is assisting me with my memory, which I can struggle with at times.”
Mairead has made huge progress in the past few weeks, her determination & strength have blown us away! She will require continuous therapies once she is discharged from the NRH, which will include the current physiotherapy, Speech & Language therapy & occupational therapy alongside numerous & regular follow up medical appointments, in both Galway & Dublin.
A group of her friends have come together to set up this Go Fund Me Page & we would be very grateful if you could support, in any small way, both the medical and therapy costs that Mairead & her family will face in the weeks, months and perhaps the years ahead. (Recovery from such surgery & the stroke may continue for years). This will help ease the financial burden of the therapy costs and allow Mairead to concentrate solely on her recovery.
