A Simple Act of Kindness

It all started with something small—but it has grown into something much bigger. A few days ago, while driving through my city, I noticed a family standing by the side of the highway. It was a cold winter day, and I couldn’t help but notice the children, bundled up in what looked like worn-out jackets. It broke my heart to think of them walking to school, facing this winter weather without proper coats to keep them warm.

I couldn’t shake the image of those children out of my mind. Today I decided I had to do something. So I gathered up three gently used coats I had in my closet before going to work and I drove to where I had seen the family before. Their faces lit up when I handed them the coats—they were overwhelmed with gratitude, and I could see the relief in their eyes knowing that at least for that day, those children would be warm.

That simple act of kindness left a deep impact on me. It made me realize just how many kids in our city, especially in inner-city neighborhoods, walk to school or wait at bus stops in the cold with inadequate clothing. Many of these children don't have the luxury of warm coats, and winter can be especially tough for them.

This experience sparked something inside me. I want to help make sure no child has to face the bitter cold without the proper garments to keep them safe and warm. I’m now trying to call on my friends and family to help raise money for children in need all over the city—focusing on sizes ranging from small to extra-large, approximately for children sizes 5 to 18.

But I want to do more than just provide warmth. I want to bring hope and encouragement to these kids as well. With every coat donated, I will be including a small note in the pocket—a note that you, the donor, can personalize with words of encouragement, positivity, or advice. It could be as simple as “You are loved” or “Stay strong, brighter days are ahead.” At your discretion, your words could be the little boost a child needs to feel supported and cared for.
