Coast to Coast Cycling for Hunger

Donation protected
In a country as prosperous as the US, it is sad to hear that in 2019 10.5% of US households faced hunger insecurity throughout the year.  We need to address the fact that 34.9% of households living with incomes below the Federal Poverty Line were food insecure last year, and that 13.6% of households with children were affected by food insecurity. Addressing these food insecurity issues is just what the Maryland Food Bank and Sunshine Division are doing every day.

While we recognize that food insecurity is prevalent in every area of the US, our campaign is focused on combating food insecurity in Oregon and Maryland.  In Oregon, the food insecurity rate is 11% of the population, which equates to 1 in 8 families struggling to find food to feed their families.  A study shows that 13% of Oregonians living in urban areas are experiencing food insecurity, as well as 12.5% of rural communities each year. In Maryland, the food insecurity rate is also 11% of the population.  According to Feeding America, 667,110 Marylanders are struggling with hunger, and of that number, 216,070 are children.

To help combat food insecurity in these regions we will be embarking on a 4,000 mile cross country bicycling fundraiser, beginning in Astoria, OR and ending in Ocean City, Maryland to raise awareness of the food insecurity that many families face on a daily basis, the importance of physical activity for both our physical and mental health, and to assist with the sustainability of the  Maryland Food Bank and the Sunshine Division.

The goal of this campaign is to not only raise awareness of food insecurity, but to also have a positive impact on the organizations and the communities they serve.  For example, The Sunshine Division has been serving the community for nearly a century, and today they continue to deliver over 1,200 free boxes of food each week to families in the greater Portland metro area – equating to over 34,000 meals each week.   Also, since 1979 the Maryland Food Bank has been serving the immediate needs of the community, while simultaneously  working to find long term ways to reduce hunger in Maryland, and because of the buying power of the Maryland Food Bank, one dollar can supply the community with access to 3 meals.

While these organizations are working tirelessly to serve the community, they cannot do this without yours and my support.  So please support our campaign in our efforts to reduce hunger in Maryland and Oregon, and to spread the message of the importance of sustainable healthy food sources in our community that will guarantee its success.
