Coach Husband's Final Wish

My name is Arthy Bedell Osayi, a Special Education Teacher in a Title 1 school for students who are diagnosed with Autism. My husband Lugard Osayi and I reside in Durham, North Carolina. Lugard is an American citizen who was born March 25, 1972 in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. Lugard loves life, and with a grateful heart embraces every opportunity for advancement for self and family. On April 13, 2018 Lugard was diagnosed with Stage 4 Glioblastoma, an aggressive form of cancer that occurred in his brain. The prognosis was devastating but we remained optimistic.
Because of our optimism and Lugard’s strength, hope, faith and drive, Lugard spoke of future plans, one being visiting our daughter who resides in Nigeria. To bring his plans to fruition, Lugard concentrated on his health and we began treatment process.
In May of 2018, doctors at Duke University Hospital performed the laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) surgery on Lugard which removed a vast majority of the tumor. During recovery we learned the surgery affected the use of his left side(hemiparesis), slurred speech along with motor skills deficiencies. After weeks of radiation, months of chemotherapy, specialized therapy and regular gym visits, the scans showed the tumor was barely visible on his MRI on September 2019. Lugard was happy and looked forward to returning to work as a department manager at Walmart and as a Customer Service Representative at Circle K.
During a follow up appointment two months later, we learned Lugard’s tumor had returned and he would have to restart chemotherapy. Although sadden, Lugard continued to have hope and attend his regular medical appointments. Last month, we were informed that the tumor continues to grow and that Lugard’s time with us is coming to an end sooner than expected. It breaks our hearts but Lugard continues to exemplify what a strong individual he is.
With your assistance, I would like to grant Lugard his wish, to visit our daughter and other family members in Nigeria, before that time comes where he is no longer with us. I am urgently asking for donations that will be used to purchase roundtrip airline tickets from North Carolina to Benin City, travel documents, travel insurance, accommodations, food, transportation and medical assistance while in Nigeria.
Due to time constraint and Lugard’s health, we hope to embark on this journey, to bring joy and happiness to Lugard, while he is still with us.
