01867 Neighborhood Preservation is a Reading MA coalition whose mission is to preserve the beauty and integrity of Reading MA neighborhoods and historic homes.
Our current goal is to save the iconic historic home located at 186 Summer Avenue from demolition, as well as to preserve the character of the beautiful residential neighborhood where it has stood since 1853.
Donations are being used to promote the cause and for legal counsel.
According to the demolition application submitted to the town, the prospective buyer, Criterion Child Enrichment, intends to demolish the home and carriage house to erect a 9900 SF, one-level facility, a 2400 SF playground, and a parking lot for 20 cars. Criterion Child Enrichment has 11 other locations in the state of Massachusetts; none is located in a dense residential neighborhood such as this area of Summer Avenue. The neighborhood is put at-risk because of a state law known as the Dover Amendment, which allows a non-profit ‘educational’ facility to over-ride much of the zoning process and many of its requirements. This could happen in any residential neighborhood. Although Criterion Child Enrichment is welcome in the Reading community, we are completely opposed to them building that type of facility in one of our residentially zoned neighborhoods.
